Hey Chris-
Topics sound good. I am just really really hoping that the Character Animation topic in this book will cover a lot. I think what’s missing out there on the market is a book just devoted to this for the Flash envrionment. I have some book called Flash Cartoon Animation, by Friends of ED, but more books solely on character animation and the latest tools and techniques for the hippest shows out there would be awesome!!! Please consider!

Justin WegNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 02 06 at 5:27 pm

This is wrong on so many levels, but why can’t I stop killing these cats??!! And to top it all off, I’m eating chinese food right now and I’m pretty sure it has cat meat in it!

Okay, that last part was a lie.

C.A.No Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 02 06 at 7:18 pm

Justin, shows like Mucha Lucha and Foster’s? Can you be specific about what techniques these shows use? I just want to make sure what you would like to see. I’m thinking, panning and zooming, and possibly some visual effect? tThanks for the suggestion!

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 02 06 at 7:34 pm

Chris,
Alongside character animation, you should try to incorporate effective control of the stage; i.e. camera style movement with background elements, realistic character movement through the environment, use of special effects, and complete character development. I know you’ve already done some of this in your personal tutorials on the macromedia dev page and your home page, but i think they are an integral part of flash education that is severly lacking in most of the books out there. Keep up the great work. It’s very inspiring.

GregNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 03 06 at 3:09 pm

Hey Chris-
Well yea shows like those. I’m not really too sure of the types of techniques they use, thats why I asked. I mean it’s just a show like Foster’s looks so completely different than a lot of Flash stuff that is out there on the internet and on other TV shows. I mean if you just watch one episode you’ll see what I’m talking about. I don’t know maybe you can contact them or something?

Justin WegNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 03 06 at 9:22 pm

I have seen several episodes and I am good friends with one of the animators. They design in Illustrator and import intio Flash. From there it’s a combination of motion tweens, shape tweens and old school frame by frame animation technique. The best animators never rely on just 1 technique, they always mix techniques together depending on what action is needed. Specifically the character Blue – he is a combination of all these techniques. Perhaps a section on combining animation techniques would be a good thing.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I once saw this as a video presentation on devnet, but it’s now gone. Is this one hour video clip still available in any shape or form anywhere? If so, I’d greatly appreciate it. :-)

Eivind G.No Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 09 06 at 4:10 pm

Hi Chris,

Would you consider having a dvd-rom to go with the book? Although I enjoy reading and learning from books, somehow I find that I learn much quicker when there is also a video-tutorial to study. For instance, in your Flash devnet “Drawing and animating a character…”-tutorial there were lots of small hints and tips that were not included in the written version found in this forum, although excellent as well.

It would be quite helpful since animation is about movement. With some books, you can only guess what the actual animation the authors are referring to is going to look like. But it’s also great to be able to read the details in writing as well. It’s a one-two punch… :-)

I’ve got Flash Cartooning by Clarkson, which is interesting. But I have to say I’m very much looking forward to your book, as your teachings on Flash character animation is the best I’ve ever come across. Well designed examples and also taking all aspects a notch or three up to a very professional level…!

Would you also be able to add a few pages about what colours and formats etc. to consider/be aware of when exporting to broadcasting for instance. I’ve worked on a couple of projects where getting the colours right for tv was a real obstacle… and they didn’t turn out quite as well as we had hoped.

I for one am willing to pay quite a bit more for the book if there are video tutorials included as well… Thanks for your efforts man!

Eivind G.No Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 10 06 at 4:32 am

Sorry, I only now managed to see that you’ve already stated that the book will come with a source CD.

Eivind G.No Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 10 06 at 4:36 am

Thanks – and yes it is still available – and due to its ever-growing popularity, it will be for some time. It was, at one time and may still be, one of the most popular resources on devnet. Due to the Adobe merger the URL was recently changed to:
http://adobe.breezecentral.com/p46515568/
I keep all links to all articles and breeze presentations under the “Flash Articles” section in the Links category.

Hey Chris, your book sounds incredible just how you say it´s going to be, I´m waiting for it very much and I´m sure it´s gonna be amazing. I think you can include some cool things and interaction that you can make using simple buttons and animation, just like your site of wines (¿how you make that the animation starts when you rollover the bottle of wine and just when you rollout starts another animation that starts when the previous ends?), or cool things like the official site of the movie “Corpse Bride”. Well, many thanks for all your articles I think I don´t missed any of them

saulNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 17 06 at 12:53 am

No specific reasons. I use Cantasia as well and I like both. I have no preference over one or the other. Captivate being a *Macrodobe* product has the edge over Camtasia. No other reason – they are both great products.

Question: is this better than what Photoshop already has in File>Scripts>Export Layers?

With that you can export all layers as a numbered PNG and import them as a sequence in Flash at once.

Stan VassilevNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Apr 19 06 at 1:33 am

Hi Stan – that must be a CS feature. I am running 7.0 right now but my CS version is on the way to me as of this writing. The Psd2Fla will launch and create the layered Fla in 1 single command from the File>Export menu in P’shop. So in that sense it may be easier. The cost is pretty high in my opinion and the only reason I purchased it is because I needed it for a high profile project which has the budget, but also because I am working with over 100 layers across several PSD files.

alcNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 25 06 at 4:36 pm

I actually want to do that myself…I found this tutorial online called ‘Flashification’, and you basically create the layout in Photoshop (I used Illustrator and exported the design to photoshop) and then slice it up and save the slices as images and then import them into flash- I’m still in the process of doing that, so I don’t know if that gives the sames results as what you’re looking for….can you animate those images in flash later on?!

rskaNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jul 05 06 at 12:41 am

David,
yes it does – but there are many advantages to having this kind of tool in Flash. The biggest is that in all my years and the hundreds of projects I have worked on, most have been with various teams and almost every single team has shared Flash files. Not one single project has anyone ever said “Let’s use MOHO!”
IMO, MOHO has a quirky UI and I simply do not have the time to learn the program right now. Not taking anything away from it of course – but Toon Boom Solo has IK and also Glue as well – which blows away any plugin for Flash – but in the end, it is the sharing of FLA files that is prevalent with each and every client project (at least in my neck of the woods).

Dear rska,
I know what video your talking about. Open Flash and go to “Help” at the top and scroll to “Samples.” It will open a safari page, once it has opened the Safari page scroll to the bottom and click on “More Samples.” When you are there you will see a menu to the right somwhere in there you need to click on “3D Animation.” Scroll through to about middle of the page. All the way to the far left you will see the little person’s head click on the pop-out text next to it. Scroll down to below the picture of the Flash screen and click on “Watch the presentation.” And let the page load andit will set up so that you can watch it.

Try a Toshiba M7 TabletPC. Cheaper than a Cintiq, and while it’s doesn’t have quite as many degrees of pressure, it is pretty damn responsive and great to draw with (and far cheaper than a Cintiq). It’s solid and has the only decent screen resolution of any TabletPC out there. It uses the same Wacom technology as the Cintiq.

As a must-have accessory, the Cintiq 18ux pen — much better than the toshiba supplied stylus.

I know this may be heresy to a Mac user (if you are one), but it’s a damn cool machine, especially for drawing or 3d work. I use both, and I love my M4 (one step down from the newer M7) — but I would buy an Apple tablet in a second if they would just release the damn thing. Maybe this September…probably not.

But I didn’t know that this is also a finalist of this festival. well…actually…I didn’t really know anothing of this festival^^
The reasons for this is that Iwas not that interested in festivals.

You probably already know that the swf file for the Hula girl in both IE6 and Opera 9 don’t render correctly. The width breaks the layout. Works ok in Firefox 1.5.07. Unfortunately I don’t have any tips on how to fix it.

Jonas (nor)No Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 06 06 at 9:43 pm

Chris, I think that’s a real handy effect, but not necessarily ‘what the people want’. I’m guessing that the majority of forum posters were looking for an animation tutorial on masking the text by the strokes, so we would see three lines drawn for the ‘H’ in hand, etc. I’m also guessing that this effect is a pain in the a-hole, requiring probably hours of shape tweening. In conclusion, I’m guessing there’s no easy way to create a ‘real’ writing effect.

Also, you didn’t talk about your second method of creating this effect. How does that go?

BenNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 11 06 at 2:50 am

Ben – your comment came a few minutes too soon – i just completed the article by adding the 2nd technique – which is much easier than you might think :)

-chris

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 11 06 at 3:05 am

I use a similar technique to #2, but I use a mask and start at the beginning. Works well, but I don’t see any benefits to either technique.

JasonNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 11 06 at 10:46 pm

Chris, what are the advantages/disadvantages to using a fireworks blur vs. using the flash 8 blur filter?

BenNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 12 06 at 8:37 pm

This article was written pre-flash 8, so the advantage of having Flash 8 is, you don’t have to use use another program like Fireworks. I will be updating this article or at least writing a new one soon :)

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 12 06 at 8:46 pm

Sometimes the built in Flash blur can slow down the player more than using a pre-blurred bitmap from an external program. The down side of using bitmaps is it takes up more space in your project file (because you’ve already got the vector artwork in the project, and if you were blurring it in Flash it wouldn’t take up more space). But if size isn’t a problem, then using another program to do the blurring can still be a better option. Although you can’t do the really nice bluring transitions you can do with AS or motion-tweening with the Flash blur.

So it’s worth experimenting and considering both techniques.

Paris Hilton had sex with her new boyfriend in a portable toilet, it has been claimed.

The hotel heiress is alleged to have got hot and steamy with new lover Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos in the unlikely love den at an exclusive Hollywood party.

According to reports, the pair spent the evening kissing and groping each other before sneaking into one of the loos to get frisky.

Meanwhile, Paris was reportedly overheard fuming into her mobile phone “she’s a jealous, ugly, anorexic idiot” – sparking rumours over which one of her celebrity enemies she was describing.

The sexy star, who recently split from fiance Paris Latsis, was reportedly heard spouting the torrent of insults as she got out of a limousine in New York last week.

Speculation is now rife Paris could have been talking about either teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen or former best friend, and ‘Simple Life’ co-star, Nicole Richie.

i am also experiencing the same problem with Flash-8 Blur filter effect as it slow-downs my Windy-Smoky clouds animation.
I have got a great idea for my first-ever personal portfolio website but it seems impossible to implement only because of this slow-down speed problem as most of the users on the web might not be able to enjoy my website because of this slow-down issue.

I also cannot try the Fire-Works blur technique because that wont generate the true Smoky-Clouds animation as can be done in Flash.

I beg you all part of this forum, if you can please helo me out by suggest anyother technique or way of doing it in Flash. I would really be grateful for it… PLEASE

If I posted in the wrong one please move it in the right thread.
I am a dentistry student, and want to make a website on the teeth treatment problems and teeth implants.

I wrote several articles for this theme, installed the wordpress engine, but I don’t like what I see in the result.
Could you recommend me a designer who could improve the look of my website and how much it would cost me.

Here is an example of my website Dental Implant
Thank you in advance. Here is the contact email john@algreatpics.net

Hey, I have been looking into mic’s. I am a newbie animator (I mean real new—I am a stay at home mom) and happened upon your site while doing research. I was so impressed with the sound of your daughter I wanted to look into it. I was wondering what you are using (pre-amp) to connect to your computer.

This afternoon I get to use the ToonBoom Solo demo…I am excited :-) . I just got the email from the sales lady.

I really appreciate your time!!!

I use M-Audio Firewire Solo – i highly recommend any interface that supports firewire over USB.
Toon Boom Solo rocks! You’ll love it!
Let me know how it goes :)

Does she want Meagan the fish to keep her old fish company? I love it. You going to make a series of your daughter?

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Dec 22 06 at 3:11 am

Thanks all.
Smidget: she has an uncanny ability to remember everything – but now that I have recorded and animated this, she has watched it enough times to know it word for word :)

Eric: I have enough recorded audio to animate her for the rest of my life :)

Once co-worker just flips over your work.

Hey Chris, what a nice animation!, the most i like is, I think the black and white feel of the Andrea cartoons, makes me remember the past great times of the animation and how simple was in that times, but who knows why, it makes you see it, over and over again. Your Andrea animation is just like the same feeling. Great work!!

RobertNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Dec 22 06 at 5:57 pm

Chris: Oh gawd. About 2-3 days to get everything she wants or she’ll be one unhappy Andrea. ;)

A series on Meagan (or was it Nathan) the fish’s life would be cool! Haha

Nice

smidgetNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Dec 22 06 at 11:31 pm

Chris,
I’m sure I will not be disappointed in the book. It’s nice to see a modest flash animator who knows how to animate and responds to emails. I’ve emailed a few who never respond. I’m a fan who appreciates that. I’ve seen your tutorials on Macromedia/Adobe so I already know that I won’t be disappointed.

GGNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Dec 27 06 at 12:18 pm

GG: Santa actually did bring Andrea a fish named Megan :)
He left it in a bowl next to the tree with a sign that read; “Hi, I’m Megan.”
We already have a 10 gallon tank with 3 other goldfish (Henry, John & David), and Megan soon joined them Xmas morning. All the fish are doing well :)

Chris,

Sounds like great fun! I just finished my first professional flash animation for a client and wanted to thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. It helped quite a bit (I would show it to you but my contract has me under NDA). Certainly the first time was very much a learning experience, fortunately I got paid for it! Hopefully I’ll be able to attend the next flashforward and see you speak. Keep up the hard work.

ChuckNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 10 07 at 2:53 pm

I was in your FlashFoward session on Monday, but I walked in late so I didn’t get to hear how I could obtain your source files for the animations you were sharing. Could you e-mail me the link or send me the files???

Thank you for the session and especially for sharing the stories from your college days that helped us to see where you’re coming from and what your motivation is.

GGNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 11 07 at 8:17 am

Chris,

I assume from seeing some of your pics on the net that you use windows.

I assume since you went to Macworld that you are a mac user.
Which do you use primarily, windows or mac?
Which do you prefer?
I assume mac since you went to Macworld.
I’m still a fan if you use a mac.

GGNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 11 07 at 8:23 am

I think I already know the answer.
I remember Apple’s website showing your dog icon (I think) on their website in their software area and advertising flash.
You mentioned on an old thread about it being cool.

GGNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 11 07 at 8:28 am

Hi GG,
to the surprise of many, I am all PC – but for no other reason than the fact that Flash has always performed noticeably faster and smoother on PC (authoring and player performance). Now that Macs are Intel based, I am curious to see how the next version of Flash will perform. I would love to add a Mac to my arsenal of tools. Being cross-platform would have its advantages.
PCs have a number of 3rd party applications that are simply not available for Macs. I use several of these kinds of programs to extend Flash.
So, I have nothing against either platform – to me it’s like Ford vs Chevy.
:)

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 12 07 at 3:51 am

LOL! Wiki This! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Gold_Rush

“7×7=49″, while of course true, is a nice bit of designer style revisionist history.

It is estimated that almost 90,000 people arrived in California in 1849 — about half by land and half by sea.[39] Of these, perhaps 50,000 to 60,000 were Americans, and the rest were from other countries.[34] By 1855, it is estimated at least 300,000 gold-seekers, merchants, and other immigrants had arrived in California from around the world.[40] The largest group continued to be Americans, but there were tens of thousands each of Mexicans, Chinese, French, and Latin Americans,[41] together with many smaller groups of miners, such as Filipinos and Basques.[42] A modest number of miners of African ancestry (probably less than 4,000[43]) had come from the American South, the Caribbean and Brazil.[44]

BikefitterNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 12 07 at 3:45 pm

Thanks Bikefitter! Funny, I had thought that the Goldrush did in fact have something to do with the football team’s name – but some of the history I learned was that the gold rush started in 1848. Then someone in San Fran told me it was because the city itself is 7 square miles.
I stand corrected after reading the wiki page. Off to edit my entry now.
Thanks again.

Hey Chris
I love your work (P.S. do you still have the desktop pet for the dog out there?) Do you do much action scripting and do you think that all flash designers should be able to write code to be successful?

Gene HarmonNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 23 07 at 1:15 am

“Chris, does this group have a website or blog?”
Yes they do Scott, but it’s password protected and not very available to the public. They tell me they are thinking of building a public site soon.

“…do you still have the desktop pet for the dog out there?) Do you do much action scripting and do you think that all flash designers should be able to write code to be successful?”
Hi Gene, the desktop dog needs to be added back into the site. During the last site update he got shelved temporarily. I simply have been too busy to add him back – but I will and possibly with more animations.
I do some AS – basic stuff like loadMovie and gotoAndPlay functionality. Anything more and I consult with friends who specialize in this area.
I do not think a designer needs to know programming to be successful – I am proof of that – I couldn’t code my way out of a wet paper bag, but I do seem to get by. I used to think I needed to learn AS, but a friend who is a great programmer (Urami) said to me once that there’s no need for someone with my skillset to learn it when there are so many who code very well and can help.
She has proven herself to be right. Many of the projects I am involved in that require programming, have a coder designated for such task.
On the other hand, if you can do both really well, you are a double threat, and that can only help you.

A Chicago lawyer named George successfully defends a major crime lord from charges of dealing drugs, racketeering, murder, kidnapping, and selling arms.
As he is leaving the courtroom, an indignant old woman grabs him by the arm. “Young man, where are your Christian scruples? I believe you would defend Satan himself!”
“I don’t know,” George says, “what has your kid done?”

Google offering wireless broadband service isn’t too surprising. I expected Google to make a move in ISP filed for a while, especially dedicated Internet access lines. Their recent acquisitions of dark fiber and Internet hosting start-ups is indication to that. This April fool joke might be just a hint of Google’s more realistic plans for the near future!

From there it goes through the process of printing (whatever that means) and there is also a CD included which has source files for almost every topic. The book right now, pending any delays, is scheduled for release August 6. I’ll be updating you all here as we get closer to that date.

Thanks Justin – I think you will be pleased by the contents of the book topics. There is similar stuff to my online articles but also a lot of additional material. You will also get source files for nearly every topic on the included CD. Some topics/techniques simply can not be described different from what I have already written – like my article on Flash to video – but all in all, this book represents almost everything I know when it comes to using Flash.

patzo – the publisher will detirmine the price and i think it will be around $30-$40 US. I will post more info to the blog as we get closer to the release date.

ever played video games back in the day? they always said : CHEATERS DONT WIN

so why should i “win” when i cheat in flash. cheating isnt nice :(
what will the book be exactly about?
is it worth getting if you know how to use flash or is it only for people who are starting to use flash?

MarkPNo Gravatar added these pithy words on May 03 07 at 9:32 pm

MarkP – the term “Cheat” here isnt the same as playing a video game – “cheat” here means finding shortcuts to doing things in Flash, hopefully in ways you never knew before. The book is filled with just about everything I have ever learned about Flash over the past several years. “Cheating” here is having the advantage of a book where all these “cheats” are in one convenient place – so contrary to your own belief…cheaters do sometimes win. If you are hesitant to purchase the book then I recommend waiting until after it has been released and reading the reviews on amazon and wherever else people write reviews. You may be able to go to the local bookstore or find a friend who owns it and thumb through each page to make sure it’s for you. This book assumes you have a good knowledge of how Flash works – it is not a re-hash of the help files. I wouldn’t tell a newbie not to buy it either. It is what it is.

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on May 04 07 at 5:25 am

Just trying to find out about your opinion on the help file system in CS3. I have purchased the CS3 web design suite and I am very disappointed in the help files that came with the product. They only appeared to be a one-third the information that was in Studio 8 and MX2004. The video workshop files as tutorials are of such poor video quality, that they are next to nothing. Any code, headers, text are not discernable. I really think the product is lacking in this area???? I have contacted everyone at Adobe and they do not seem to even care. I get bounced back and forth between Customer Service and Tech Support for about two weeks now. Can you suggest anyone at Adobe that would have an open ear for my concerns??? Love your tutorials by the way and intend to buy your new one soon as I recover from the CS3 issue. Thanks.

JasonNo Gravatar added these pithy words on May 17 07 at 3:36 pm

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 2:34 am

Hey Chris, let me know how much cheaper it is. My wife and myself did the 100 dollar comcast 3 month plan but as soon as that deal was over we are paying almost double that for telephone, tv, and internet. We hardly use our phone and that is about 50 dollars a month. What a rip off.

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 2:37 am

Eric, the package deal is $99 per month for all (TV, internet and phone). I have a 2nd phone line so I pay more of course – so it is cheaper and it’s faster than comcast – FIOS has two speed packages and their slowest speed is still faster than comcast. You can opt for the really super fast internet but of course you pay a lot more. Also, it may or may not be available in your town.

Wow Chris, congratulations!! for finish the book, I can’t wait to read it!

Comcast uses fiber optic technology too. DSL and Verizon phone service use copper.

danNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 1:16 pm

dan – interesting – why does Comcast not mention that on their site or advertise that they use fiber optics? Maybe in only a few small areas right now?

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 2:12 pm

Hi Eric, yeah I had some time on my hands yesterday since I had some down time while switching ISPs. :)

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 2:30 pm

Yeah because for comcast, they connect into a co-axle cable (tv cable) for the internet, last I looked at mine and last time I installed one of these cables it was copper on the inside. I guess they use FiOS in different areas.

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 9:05 pm

Actually, I’d have to say I disagree.

The right voice talent- whether previously successful in “complete” roles or not- makes a huge impact to the character. The things Mike Meyers brought to Shrek, for example, are a big part of the reason the kids enjoy him as a character.

Remember, the actors in these roles do not watch finished animation and try to synch up their voices to the lip motions they see. They develop characters with the script, the writers, producers and directors to bring those characters to life- very much the way they do in live-action pieces. Only then do they record the tracks and scenes, and that informs the animators and directors on the final product. A lot of give and take goes on in the process.

The actor injects a lot more (depending on the style of direction) into that character than just the audio of their vocal chords vibrating in tune to the script.

Who else but Jeremy Irons, for an example that goes way back, should have voiced Scar in the Lion King? Are you saying these non-traditional voice-actors do such a poor job?

They also contribute to the “gatekeeper” effect of parents who take their kids to (yet another) made-for-kids entertainment and get to enjoy hearing actors they know, doing things they are known for- even if it is missed on the kids. This may well account for the box-office challenge you mention at the end of your post.

I’ll bet it does make a difference.

DrewNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 10:04 pm

Drew – good point but not the point I am trying to make – often actors do a great job when voice acting for animated character roles (Ellen Degeneres in Nemo for example). My point was that the target audience (children) don’t care (for the most part) if it Bruce Willis or somebody completely unknown in Hollywood. But all too often these films over saturate the credits with big name actors for the sake of…well…marketing? We as parents aren’t choosing to see these movies by ourselves – we are taking our children because of the content – not the voices. Although there are always exceptions to the rule but overall, previews that brag about the cast as if it makes a difference to the children has always seemed a little odd to me.

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 05 07 at 11:57 pm

David StillerNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 06 07 at 4:23 pm

Thanks David – well I spoke too soon – just got the revisions back from the proof readers – I am afraid to look :p

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 06 07 at 4:32 pm

There is definitely a difference between casting for type than going purely for the biggest name the studio can snag. That for me is the real problem here… an actor that fits the role (the great example of Jeremy Irons and Scar above or Robin Williams as the Genie from Aladdin) where their screen persona is a benefit to the character are good choices. But shoehorning a top male/female lead into a role for what can only really be marketing reasons is where the trouble starts. Some studios realize this more than others (praise to Pixar in the main) – I mean could you imagine say anyone other than Craig T Nelson as Mr Incredible?

To a certain extent I think the famous voices thing comes from what the animation director hears in his head when he is thinking of certain roles, and they are bound to think of actors as like casting a regular movie these people are their point of reference. So it may not all be about marketing… but maybe thats wishful thinking.

DaveNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 07 07 at 9:25 pm

I love the horse. I haven’t had a chance to download the CS3 version yet but I was wondering would this be a problem on more complex textures (with the solid grey its not an issue). Or is it smart enough to deal with that.?

DaveNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 08 07 at 3:05 pm

It’s smart – in fact you may not even need to separte out parts to different images/layers – depends on the image and animation of course – my next experiment may be with textures.

RobertNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 08 07 at 9:13 pm

Hi Robert,
as far as a tool like this in Flash goes…I legally can’t say yes or no – in fact, I can’t say anything at all. I personally have begged for this feature straight to the people who would make the decision to develop it – to be honest, it amazes me that Flash, one of the most popular animation tools on the market, does not already have this feature – it is almost a sin. let me just say that many people feel this tool should be implemented – I can’t say who those people are and if they have any influence on something like this happening – so…I will just end it here before a rumor starts – BUT, if and when it does happen and I am allowed to say something – you will hear about it first here :)
But that’s not what I’m saying – at all – legally anyway…sort of. I wouldn’t know – because I don’t know anybody who knows anything about whatever it is we’re talking about…at all. What was the question?
:)

awesome feature. i never figured out how anime studio works but the example that comes with it is cool. yeh i wish flash had this feature but then i prefer doing everything frame by frame. playing around with such a thing and being done in one hour. i dont know but to me that seems like a LONG time for such an animation. yeh you might call me lazy which i probably am but i think i could do this frame by frame in 45 minutes- oh great i saved 15 minutes haha
anyways im only saying i prefer to do everything frame by frame and have full control of what im doing rather than using some strange filters or any animation tricks some software offers

MarkPNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 17 07 at 9:52 pm

Hi MarkP – FBF rocks and I’m sure you’re really good at it – the Puppet tool is not a filter – it’s basically an IK and image warp feature rolled into one single tool. You have complete control over how it works.
The hour it took me included exporting from Flash as PNGs and importing them into After Effects. I will be the first to admit I am not a traditional animator so my skill level at animating a horse galloping in 45 minutes just won’t happen – too difficult for me as i tend to be a perfectionist – to a fault admittedly :)

vpadaqNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 19 07 at 2:16 am

I downloaded the trial version of AE and boy was this tool fun. So easy to get the hang out too. I took this robot character I made and then took the separate parts and exported them as pngs. Then I imported them like Chris has said and BAM, I was animating in seconds. I like the puppet tool because it gives it a 3D quality. I would say it is more like a 2.75 D. Not that 2.5D Chris talks about but it seems a little bit more than just that. Thanks Chris for sharing this tool.

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 19 07 at 2:46 am

yeh overall it looks very awesome. i mean look at the connection of the body and the neck. you couldnt do that in flash with motion tweens or even shape tweens unless you dont have black outlines but the outlines are connected here and they just get expanded. it just sounds great and a good way for people who cant do a fbf animation- with cant i mean 1) they havent gained a certain skill level yet or 2) they are using a mouse. im not saying a tablet makes everything way easier but certainly WAY faster. i wouldnt want to do any fbf animation with a mouse. ive done so and it just takes so much time while i can do a lot of stuff with my tablet- in an alright ammount of time. while with a mouse youll spend some time on a single illustration and wouldnt it be great if a program could help you with adding live to this character- with this plug in or new feature or whatever it is you finally can. forget about the standard limb tween. oh and you know what my animations are like in case you visit your own forum and i know you do so you know im a crappy animator haha

MarkPNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 20 07 at 7:39 pm

Hi Chris,

Adobe’s LiveDocs description says the Puppet Tools can be applied to vector graphics as well as raster images. Is there a reason why you exported your horse as .png (raster) instead of .eps or .ai (vector) files? I’m sure you know how useful it would be to go from Flash to AE for this tool, and then back to Flash, keeping everything in vector format.
Just curious, as I haven’t DL’d the trial version to give this a whirl yet.

gregNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 21 07 at 5:18 am

Hi greg,
yeah i need to do more tests in this regard – i did import an swf of just a circle made with the Oval tool in Flash and used the puppet tool on it. In AE’s export settings I chose not to render as JPG format (thinking this would keep it all vector). The rendered file contained no animation. When I tried again and selected JPG format the animation rendered with the export file but, as expected, was a bitmap sequence. I still need to test this though – I had motion blur on which may force the bitmap fomat on export. More tests to come, but all in all, yeah, exporting to vector would make life even better.

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 21 07 at 2:10 pm

Chris-

I played around with it a little. It looks like PuppetTool-amatizing vector art bakes it out into rasters, which sort of makes sense considering the triangulated deformation mesh the tool generates. I confirmed this by exporting (not rendering) .swf’s, selecting “Rasterize” and “Ignore” for the unsupported swf features in each case. The animation only appeared when “Rasterize” was selected.

So this pretty much puts the kibosh on the Flash->AE->Flash workflow I was hoping for. Too bad. Still a cool tool, though.

Hey, next time you have your secret Adobe friends who you can’t talk about on the line, ask them for something like Illustrator’s Envelope Distort by Mesh tool to be put in AE. Having pins, starch, and a timeline for this would be great. I’d imagine the overlap bit would be near impossible, though.

gregNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 21 07 at 4:39 pm

greg – thanks – those are exactly my findings as well. As for the requested feature – I may one-up you on that, but I am not at liberty to utter a single word right now. Good things might be coming in the future for us that I think you and I will be very excited about – perhaps a year or so from now.

(nudge-nudge-wink-wink)

Chris-

I’m new to Flash and having a blast with it, and your video tutes are great. I have played around with Anime Studio a bit and was blown away by the bones feature. I can only hope Adobe adopts something like it for Flash, the sooner the better.

brian cNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 21 07 at 7:18 pm

NDA’s are such a buzzkill.

Flash’s animation toolset hasn’t changed substantially since version 4. I’m guessing that with v.10 being the first all-Adobe build and not a residual MM product, we’ll finally see some of the true Adobe interoperability and feature sets everyone was hoping for with v.9. Looking forward to it.

gregNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 21 07 at 7:54 pm

Question: How do I get a simple jumping character (movie clip created in flash) to display animated in AE, so that I can zoom in or out (or dissolve into it) without the motion stalling like it does in flash? When brought into AE, there is no motion.

AE’s help viewer says: “When After Effects imports a SWF file, its internal keyframes are preserved so that you can continue to use them for timing other effects.” ??

The swf files I import into AE look fine – except for symbols which have looping animation built into them. They stay static. Sorry to be such a newbie but… please help.

Hey Chris, Welcome Back. You seem to have had a fun time. I live 4 hours from NYC and I have only been a long time ago on family vacation and school trips. I need to go over there with my wife and see me some theater.

Your reel is amazing. How did you animate that Mouse looking thing?

EricNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jun 28 07 at 11:53 pm

Willo: thanks!

Mrzee: yeah, I had plans to contact Fran and an animator named Joe Corrao I work with but was unable to because I was simply too busy with the conference and family. Next time.

vishvas khanna: Thanks. Top secret animation? Not sure what that refers to.

Eric: Thanks! The “mouse” is Piper O’Possum from Nick Jr. – Little Airplane (NYC) is a production company that animates him and they asked me to do some animation tests. The character is a bunch of bitmaps imported into flash – then I used “cut-out” style animation.

:)

Thanks

Andre: there will be a companion website for the book – http://www.howtocheatinflash.com but that isn’t live yet either. I am going to find out asap what the deal is – it’s priority for me this week. Stay tuned and on behalf of whoever is responsible – I apologize.

Ok – just heard back from the publisher regarding this issue:

“Thanks for letting me know about this. The book is now published in the UK and is due to publish any day now in the US. I don’t know why Amazon are telling its customers differently but will look into it to see if we can get them to stop as soon as possible.”

So it seems that Amazon may be sending out some sort of auto-response with an inaccurate delay date(s).

‘Shipping estimate for these items: August 21, 2007

For delivery in the Netherlands..
So it still seems to take long and the estimate is rough.

IanNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Aug 27 07 at 2:28 am

Hey Chris,
I pre-ordered your book months ago on Amazon and got it on Saturday. I’ve read most of it so far. I sure wish I had this when I first started flash… lots of great things in there. Having worked with you before, I adopted a few of your methods, but in your book you share so many other ways of doing the same thing… different path, same result. I don’t care how many years anyone works in digital art, there are always new things to learn. This book is like looking over your shoulder and having a peek at how you streamline your work flow. I’ve already picked up a few things I’ve never known about. I’m also enjoying the interludes… you’re an inspiration and you have so much to pass on to other artists. Adobe picked a great person for this publication. I will congratulate you already for a successful book. Excellent work.

JackieNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Aug 28 07 at 1:51 pm

Belated thanks for that tip Chris! It worked when I remembered to make that graphic symbol “loop” instead of “play once” or “single frame”.

Please let us know if Adobe has a feature wish list site for future versions of flash. I’m still wishing for a better brush tool. The one in Illustrator has been great since version 8.

SteveNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Aug 30 07 at 9:29 am

Delivery was much faster than Amazon predicted!
Since Chris has been so generous sharing his knowledge and tutorials on the internet, you may wonder if a book might ad much. Well it does.

Hi, Chris! First off, congratulations on the book!

Having never touched Flash until recently, I immediately fell in love with how powerful, yet simple, it is. I found your tutorial of how to animate a character, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve always been a fan of the classic Disney movies, and animated cartoons in general, and until recently my plan was to become a concept artist.

Having discovered how much fun it is to animate your own characters, my career plan has taken a sharp turn. With this fabulous book, I’m off to a great start. It never leaves the side of my desk, where it lies right next to “The Animator’s Survival Kit” and “The Illusion of Life”. Again, congratulations and thank you for sharing your secrets. I’ll be sure to recommend your book to every Flash designer and animator I know.

first of all its a lovely monkey. i would love to know what exactly those filters are. the first one looks like masking to me. i know adobe and i know those filters will only exist for MCs but PLEASE listen to me. animaiting with MCs isnt much fun. PLEASE make a filter support for GCs as well otherwise there is no real point.

nice, but if it only works in a swf export… then i don’t care. i work in TV so i want to be able to render in PNG sequences.. movie clips don’t play in a PNG export so they’re useless.

Some really GREAT things are in store for the next version of Flash – Richard Galvan (Flash Product manager) is serious about bringing Flash back to its roots:? Animation! I am currently in New Mexico where he presented in his keynote what they are working on for Flash CS4 – Inverse Kinematics, a new way of tweening with tons of better options and better animation control. Too much to type here but I met with Richard secretly at Flash Forward in Boston where he gave me a first hand look at these new features and I can honestly say I have never been so excited about Flash in my entire life! Hang in there a little while longer folks :)

The new flash cs4 looks like its going to save animators alot of time and from the new features it looks like it has expanded its usability tremendously. I can’t wait to get it I’m saving my money for the upgrade right now and keep it in an account so when it drops booom I got it lol.

Any ideas as to when this upgrade/new version will ship?

Right Here Right NoqNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 16 07 at 11:33 am

It will be a while since CS3 just shipped a short time ago – typically the time between the release of full version numbers is 12-18 months – so I would say around a year from now at the most. I am certain Adobe doesn’t have a release date yet for CS4 and if they did they wouldn’t advertise it at this early stage – but I’m with you, it can’t come soon enough :)

Is this IK tool behaving like the After Effects IK Chain (Puppet tool)? Or was this a separate development path as you say Macromedia were working on this prior to being bought by Adobe?

DaveNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 16 07 at 2:39 pm

Well this is fantastic. I use Maya, as well, and I can’t help but compare the animation tools to flash. So good to hear these new improvements in the timeline and IK.

I’m curious to know how this new IK will compare to IK’motion? I have a new project coming up that would benefit from the extension. Guess this is a good question on the forum ;)

Thanks for the heads up!

I would love to see a simple Forward K tool. Rather than an over complicated bone system with all the constraints and influence issues, just a simple parent chain rotation tool would be really useful.

to me its bascially like this:

Traditionists: “You mean to say I have spent thousands of hours learning an specific art that is being upstaged by these weekend workshop newbies! Come my purist friends, time for some mob mentality/brutality!”

Flashers: “Ya ok there…”

Well not everyone can afford thousands of dollars worth of equipment to record with camera. Flash makes life alot easier and you know what its still not even where it needs to be, but to say so to speak that flash is draining out the old style is absurb. No one stops traditionalists from doing their thing. This is a new age and a new time the old has past were moving forward, and as we do technology is advancing. I guess traditional animators never seen this coming. Yeah right they are just upset because they know one way and they are stubborn in their ways to try a new one.”Change is Good” HEHE

Gary Calhoun aka WarhawkNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 26 07 at 10:53 pm

While traditionalists may have a valid concern that Flash has diluted the pool, so to speak, it must be acknowledged that 2-D animation would likely be all-but non-existent at this point without the existence of Flash and tools like it. All the major film studios have closed their 2-D warehouses and migrated to 3-D render farms.

Studios were already moving away from traditional animation because it was expensive. Flash’s thrift is what allows it to thrive in the hands of a lone user or small studio. Once a company is willing to spend large sums of money on 2-D animation again, it will return, but it may be a Flash animation that proves to a company that such an idea is desirable and/or profitable.

And while the tool does not screen its user for talent, it does provide an extremely democratic means for those who are talented (many of them experienced traditional animators themselves). Since the Flash player is so pervasive, it also provides for a wide means of distribution, something that was once impossible in the studio system of yesteryear. While the current trends in 2-D may seem like a dark age for traditional animators, it’s this period that will likely allow for the future survival of traditional animation.

Justin PutneyNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 27 07 at 4:16 am

I can’t see why the “traditionalists” are so worried. If Flash is so bad, then the world probably won’t publish our shit on the web, television, film aso.

Hi Chris.
In order to get the PL key, you have to login to the TB website, into your account and go to downloads and there is a “Get your license key” link below the ” Toon Boom Digital Pro (PLE)” download link …. Something like this:

http://www.toonboom.com/products/trial_dwn/#digitalpro

Enjoy!

I also find the UI very hard to use, also the hot keys…. a nightmare. This happens mainly because I think in Flash terms … Hmm. Will try harder. The TB software is amazing.

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Oct 29 07 at 2:04 pm

Hi Chris!
Great Cartoon! I had no idea how bitter traditional animators were until I read the Cartoon Brew comments on your book title. I used to be one of those traditional “snobs” that looked down on Flash as a simple “web cartoon” tool. (Not what real animators used) It wasn’t until (after the movie I was working on called Treasure Planet) Disney layed off 90% of it’s feature animation that I had to learn some other software to make myself more marketable. Flash was what everyone was using. Thanks to your book, the world of Flash, as an animation tool, has exploded before my very eyes in a kaleidoscope of keyframes. Maybe if some of the traditional animators would just try Flash and be creative with it’s abilities they would have a different opinion or even better yet take Flash in a whole new creative direction and expand it’s capabilities.

Chris, really pleased you’ve got you Master Collection – not something I intend to buy until Adobe gets it’s pricing policies in UK & Europe sorted out.

I logged on to the UK stire and found the prices to be the same in British pounds as they are in US dollars. Probably marketing in Adobe forgot to check the exchange rates recently!

Hey, perhaps you can send them a link to http://www.xe.com/ucc/ so they can check. Last time I did it was 2 USD to 1 GBP.

At the current prices advertised on the different Adobe stores it seems I must pay $2,888 for Adobe Design Premium as opposed to $1,799 in the States – wow! that’s a $1,000 mark-up!

Until Adobe play fair with it’s UK and Euro fans then I’ll move over to open source tools…

of course you will get crap animations but thats simply because EVERYBODY can do animations in flash and everybody DOES which is awesome. kids get to tell their own stories. 10 years old kids doing their own traditional animations? no way while everybody can get flash and if you want to make a cartoon they will get it while the people who do traditional animations are mostly PROs or students who want to become PROs- at least they are all certainly WAY older then all those kids playing around with flash so it’s kind of unfair to bash those kids. in the end its all up to YOU- its not the tool but the creator.

Well, there was a reference from an early chapter on making text appear to write itself using a mask to a more advanced technique in chapter 10. Well, chapter 10 became the chapter on AS and didn’t include the advanced text animation.
There were a handful of typos and some keyboard shortcuts were incorrect. Also, a couple of source files (extensions) weren’t on the CD and there was an empty folder there as well. Minor stuff.
The 2nd edition will include all the same source files as the current edition plus more – all new topics and examples will have more FLA files added to the CD respectively.

That IK setup in the photo appears to be of the one-symbol-per-bone variety, so bones will only transform symbols and not deform them. In other words, Flash bones will work like Toon Boom’s and not Moho/Anime Studio’s. Is this correct? If this is so, maybe it’s for the best. Tweaking weights is a drag, and the time is better spent drawing anyhow. To that end, I’d rather see skeletal strokes, like from Creature House’s Expression/Living Cels, or Illustrator’s Art Brushes. It’s much better for cartoony, noodley, bendy deformations than bones are.

GregNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Nov 12 07 at 4:45 am

It’s inevitable when dealing with the net that someone out there will post your work elsewhere (especially when it’s good), but most of the time I’ve noticed it’s done by fans who had no ill-intent. I’ve seen people’s work stolen and sold for prints, way more of a kick in the pants.

I used to have an account on Deviant Art. That site had rampant art theft; you’d see peoples art on other people’s galleries, crudely altered with different colors painted over it. The site would usually catch it within a week, but lots of people would post stolen work on MySpace as well where you can’t do anything about it.

I would recommend a watermark on high-rez pics you’ve got, but aside from that, it’s usually no more then an annoyance.

“so new it has that new site smell ” You’re funny. :P Thanks for the link!

…and you are now my home page. My home page used to be mine, but I am sick of looking at it, not yet completed. WORKING on it, and learning, to accomplish in Flash and in back end programming, what I want it to look like and act like. User friendly and engaging.

Chris, you really are an inspiration. I first knew of you when a year ago (I don’t know how) I stumbled on your original Mudbubble cartoon of your daughter, Andrea Rose, animated, singing Twinkle Twinkle little star. SHE KILLS ME!!!! What a doll! :) the look on her face with the unexpected burp; the SOUND (you can hear her tiny gasp and breath change) when she sees the spider and stops singing. The frustrated sound and visual at the end: Noooooooooooooo. You animate her awesomely! You then wrote, “…to be continued” so I kept checking back. ALL of your work is amazing. Your pencil drawings are nothing less than spectacular. You ARE a true artist. I haven’t drawn in a long time, and wish I kept it up. You have me sketching again.

After sending a link to view “Twinkle Twinkle” to everyone I knew, I checked back and eventually found the Christmas one. That was also great! and just in time for Christmas. (they got that one too) THEN, just recently, I found the one on the tricycle. You know how you always wonder if subsequent follow-ups will be able to stand up to the awesome original? Well you NAILED IT with the latest version, where she talks about you on the bike. The giggles are priceless!!

Bought your book, will buy the next one. I am learning a lot from you, but mostly I just REALLY appreciate your young spirit and achievements. Thank you for sharing your gifts and insight.

I wish you continued success, and health and happiness to your family. ALWAYS! :)

Thanks – yeah – last summer a good friend asked me “Why are you NOT on YOU TUBE!?”
I had no response – i felt almost stupid :p
I am actually working on last year’s xmas animation now for you tube – i am basically exporting from Flash as PNG sequences and rebuilding it in After Effects.
From now on I am going to always work in a video format and make sure I export to both mediums (web and video) which are ironically one in the same these days. In fact, I really like the overall gritty smoothness of the you tube animation after it was put through After Effects. I may end up using a lot motr Flash and After Effects and only outputting to video from now on :)

I still can’t get over Andrea’s change in range when she sings that song at 2!! She sounded like she was singing opera!! Did she really actually get exasperated when she didn’t get her tone correct?? That was TOO FUNNY!!! At any rate, what an amazing little girl!!

I wonder where Chris will appear first, on a talk show, a news show, Saturday Night Live, cable? Someone in that realm will discover how awesome an artist, animator, visionary he is! Hold on to your hat Chris!!

TeenaMarieNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Nov 22 07 at 5:20 am

TeenaMarie – thanks but you may have lowered the bar this time :)
Yeah, Andrea had just turned 2 and it took me a while to figure out myself that she was actually getting frustrated that she first couldn’t remember some of the words and then frustrated when she sang in a key higher than she wanted. Towards the end when she starts singing in an operatic voice with a lot of vibrato – that was all her – and when she stops and says “oh!” you hear her go down an octave each time until, exasperated she simply gives up (”Nooooo!”).
She’s 4 years old now and I have some amazing audio of her that I am working on for a potential TV series. I think it has potential – at least for another web short.

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Nov 22 07 at 5:35 am

OMG, I loved the story! I was smiling through the whole description imagining her. :) This stuff will definitely be very appealing to anyone (at least) with a sense of humor. More audio??? I can’t wait!!

By the way, I saw the trillion pictures of Andrea at Flicker (proud daddy) :) Her poses are MONEY!! On top of that, she just looks like she is having the best time and enjoying her young life!

Yeah for all of you!! :) (and us!!)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mudbubble/922477911/in/set-72157602188174746/
He was born with the biggest eyes ever! At 7 years of age he is still growing into them :)
But he has always had a certain attitude about him – a very inquisitive look – as if he was always thinking, “where the hell am I and why are all of you here?!” Hard to put it into words. So one day he had a baseball hat on backwards and his complete physical image and presence resonated with me. Around that time I designed the boy character as an experiment. Macromedia soon after asked me to host an online Breeze demo about how I use Flash – so I showed everyone how I designed and animated this new boy character – little did I know just how popular that video was to become.
The dog was another semi-mindless flash creation. i do have a dog but it looks nothing like the Mudbubble dog. :)

Very cool stories Chris, I knew these characters had a close inspiration behind them, no wonder they are a hit. The creator charges his creation with a meaningful vibration and the Universe mirrors it back!

Hi!This is Luis from Granada(Spain) and i bought your book few days ago.Man..I had to say a really big “congratulation”or have to say thanks for the time to show everybody how to do those amazing(and now easy ;) ) cartoons and effects.
I´m not really good yet but i found something in the web that you´ll probably like:You can use a mask with blur by using the code:setMask. for example:image_mc.setMask(focus_mc); where image_mc is our pic and focus_mc the mask(i use focus based in a example of your book)I´ve tried this and it´s amazing to combine with Mouse.hide…
Well, wish i´ll have another book from you in my hands soon ;)
Good work!!! THANKS!

I recognizxed a Georgenes, too. Tonight, watching “Bones” there was a Papa Murphy’s commercial feature unmistakably Chris Georgenes bees buzzing about their new “Honey Whole Wheat” crust. I hope you got paid for that. They are straight out of your animation book.

Y-E-A-H!! LOVE her!! Her list goes on, and you can hear all her little mouth sound effects… just precious!

Did you remove this from Youtube? I was just going to say, I love that everyone can see what I have been enjoying for over a year now! I am glad they are here and at Mudbubble.com too. Maybe you took down to make a change? Without comparing, this one feels a little different. It sounds louder, clearer and the background is wonderful love the snow in the window!! (I just don’t remember it.)

Please keep us posted every step of you working on getting a cartoon gig of Andrea. (if I could be so bold) :P GOOD LUCK!!!

We just appreciate you and wish you the best! :)

TeenaMarieNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Nov 28 07 at 5:43 pm

Thanks TeenaMarie – yes, I had to remove it and upload new version several times. It was an audio issue – for some reason after youtube “processed” the video (that probably means compressing it), only her audio sounded much lower in volume compared to the music. I ended up going back to the source audio file and tweaking it to get the entire soundtrack normalized. I didn’t know if it worked until after I uploaded the video file.
I took this opportunity to add more animation and graphics – the background is more detailed and has some added snowfall animation. The fishbowl was tweaked as well. I also added animation of her actually writing (originally her pencil simply moved across the surface of the paper).

chrisNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Nov 28 07 at 7:14 pm

Hey Tux!
Always loved the andrea rose animations!
I have to tell you something though..
When i was on You tube directly , there were a bunch of videos labelled “lesbians kissing” that came up as “relatd videos”
I dont know if theres a porn star with a similar name, but as you develop the series of animations, you may want to check that kind of stuff that comes up as “you may like this too…” because of keywords n such.
Just thought ya might like to know!
Hey! comin to New york soon? Frani is having an opening party this weekend and ill be there!!!

Zee – thanks – yeah I saw that and I am trying to figure out how to avoid it – my keywords are not even dirty – so not sure – I will try and remove keywords like “cute” i think :p

Wow – tell Fran I say hello – i don’t have plans anytime soon but I am only a 3 hour drive away :)
Tough for me as I am in a new band and if I am not animating I am playing drums or with the clan :)

Chris,

Just wanted to say I love the Andrea Rose vids (the ooh! at the spider in Twinkle Twinkle is classic), and you’ve been a massive inspiration. I found your character animation Breeze presentation, which led me here, which led me to your book, which is opening up all sorts of possibilities…

Okay, maybe not “straight” out of your book, maybe just stinkin’ darn close IMHO.

Honestly, I went thru your bee-blur exercise awhile ago; and promptly loaned your book out (it’s a hot item ;-) so I can’t confirm it’s actually lifted as opposed to “faithfully inspired by.”

Here’s a link to a picture, since I TiVo’d the “Bones” episode:

I’ve always enjoyed using Moho 5 (now Anime Studio) for my 2D character animations:
http://www.e-frontier.com/article/articleview/1913/1/793?sbss=793

I’ve looked at ToonBoom before, besided their pricing, I never liked their bitmap based solutions (I prefer working in vectors as much as possible!)

I’ll have to look at this new package of theirs, but for the price, Anime Studio is a great package!

I’m in the traditionalist camp on many things but I do believe it is unfair to attack the flashers for the bad rap 2D animation has.

You can’t make a good Animation flash or Traditional without knowing the Principles of Animation such as squash and stretch.

I only hate Flash Animation that is poorly written.
Nothing ruins a good animation like a poorly developed concept.
I’ll go easy on kids because they are just learning.
You learn to be better by making successful attempts and silly mistakes.
My motto is better to make mistakes while you are young enough to get away with it than as an adult.

I do find this article to be hilarious because snobbery irks even me.
I’ve seen some good animation created in Flash because the artist had some experience in animation under their belt.

I have to admit that I’d love to use Anime Studio to create animation but the only reason I don’t use it is because I hate the drawing tools Anime Studio has.

Well, I’m a traditional animator since 1980’s. Flash basically saved the Canadian Animation Industry by allowing Producers to bring animation back from over seas. I’ve been working for studios who don’t push symbols but do draw some of the more zany stuff on their wacom and I’ve worked with some very skilled animators who can manipulate symbols so skillfully that it really has such beautiful “stretch and squash”.
Again purists it’s not the tool it’s the….

Nice, clean and bright. I like change, this looks good to me. Was all of this on your previous site? Where did all of your graphic links down the side go? (I liked them, it was like a bunch of bumper stickers – fun.) But this will certainly do!!

LOVE all the informative links too. Stuff to explore… great! Thanks for sharing – all in one place.

P.S. – Is it just me? the “permanent links” at the bottom are in white on this white background. Unless that’s just a problem solving test to see if your brain can solve problems… did I pass? :)

The rollover effects (the blue underline) on the links at the top of the screen cause a stutter in your webpage. I think you need an invisible underline on the mouse off position to prevent this.

I am using firefox, if it makes a difference. Looks good.

This is nice. Two things jump out at me. When you’re in the ‘books’ section, Shopping Cart is cut off, you get ‘Shopping Ca’. Also, besides clicking the logo, I don’t see a way to return the ‘home’ page. Maybe I’m blind, which is very possible. Otherwise, it looks great, much more ‘cheery’.

DamonNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 04 08 at 9:31 pm

I think the graphic for “How to Cheat in Flash” needs to be bigger, like, 300×400 or something. :)

Seriously, I think the main page may need some nice graphics, something that says “I’m an amazingly talented Flash designer”. Maybe not so grand as mudbubble’s intro, but a little something, maybe?

Just a thought.

ZebulonNo Gravatar added these pithy words on Jan 05 08 at 12:57 am

Chris, the RAZR is probably the most durable phones that Verizon carries … and one of the reasons why the lineage is still so popular today.

Paul, it’s called a damage dot.

Many operators place them inside their respective devices and Verizon is typically one of them here in the US.

The dots typically change from a white to pink/red.

I would recommend a low and slow bake in the oven rather than hair dryer … but I’m sure there are plenty of recovery “best practices”, if you google.

The dryer, although coincidental, might be one approach if you planned it out … so as to not destroy your device.

Thanks for your reply chris – appreciate it!

I can assure you it’s nothing to do with taxes in the UK – the prices I quoted are before tax.

It’s only really about price fixing – you good people in the States are lucky enough (or rather worked hard to get…) to have strong anti-trust laws that make many companies think twice before fixing prices.

In Europe, and especially the UK, the law is no were near as fair to the consumer as it is to big business.

Apple & Adobe raise their prices in the UK for one reason only – they can!

Even when the European Commission gets involved – the recent changes at iTunes UK being a prime example – and the prices are moved to a fair position – Apple have a good old moan and try and put the blame on other companies.

Their reasoning is simple – Apple will charge more – because everyone else in the UK charges more.

That’s called price fixing and Steve Jobs would find himself paying a hefty fine if he tried that kind of skewed thinking back in the States.
