Justin WegHey Chris-
Topics sound good. I am just really really hoping that the Character Animation topic in this book will cover a lot. I think what’s missing out there on the market is a book just devoted to this for the Flash envrionment. I have some book called Flash Cartoon Animation, by Friends of ED, but more books solely on character animation and the latest tools and techniques for the hippest shows out there would be awesome!!! Please consider!
C.A.This is wrong on so many levels, but why can’t I stop killing these cats??!! And to top it all off, I’m eating chinese food right now and I’m pretty sure it has cat meat in it!
Okay, that last part was a lie.
chrisJustin, shows like Mucha Lucha and Foster’s? Can you be specific about what techniques these shows use? I just want to make sure what you would like to see. I’m thinking, panning and zooming, and possibly some visual effect? tThanks for the suggestion!
JaredChris,
Alongside character animation, you should try to incorporate effective control of the stage; i.e. camera style movement with background elements, realistic character movement through the environment, use of special effects, and complete character development. I know you’ve already done some of this in your personal tutorials on the macromedia dev page and your home page, but i think they are an integral part of flash education that is severly lacking in most of the books out there. Keep up the great work. It’s very inspiring.
GregVEGAS baby!!
Send me a shirt (XXL)
and I will send you a pic with the vegas skyline!
Justin WegHey Chris-
Well yea shows like those. I’m not really too sure of the types of techniques they use, thats why I asked. I mean it’s just a show like Foster’s looks so completely different than a lot of Flash stuff that is out there on the internet and on other TV shows. I mean if you just watch one episode you’ll see what I’m talking about. I don’t know maybe you can contact them or something?
chrisI have seen several episodes and I am good friends with one of the animators. They design in Illustrator and import intio Flash. From there it’s a combination of motion tweens, shape tweens and old school frame by frame animation technique. The best animators never rely on just 1 technique, they always mix techniques together depending on what action is needed. Specifically the character Blue – he is a combination of all these techniques. Perhaps a section on combining animation techniques would be a good thing.
David Araujolove your anime’s. Gets me really inspired.
Eivind G.Thanks for this great tutorial. I once saw this as a video presentation on devnet, but it’s now gone. Is this one hour video clip still available in any shape or form anywhere? If so, I’d greatly appreciate it.
![]()
Eivind G.Hi Chris,
Would you consider having a dvd-rom to go with the book? Although I enjoy reading and learning from books, somehow I find that I learn much quicker when there is also a video-tutorial to study. For instance, in your Flash devnet “Drawing and animating a character…”-tutorial there were lots of small hints and tips that were not included in the written version found in this forum, although excellent as well.
It would be quite helpful since animation is about movement. With some books, you can only guess what the actual animation the authors are referring to is going to look like. But it’s also great to be able to read the details in writing as well. It’s a one-two punch…
![]()
I’ve got Flash Cartooning by Clarkson, which is interesting. But I have to say I’m very much looking forward to your book, as your teachings on Flash character animation is the best I’ve ever come across. Well designed examples and also taking all aspects a notch or three up to a very professional level…!
Would you also be able to add a few pages about what colours and formats etc. to consider/be aware of when exporting to broadcasting for instance. I’ve worked on a couple of projects where getting the colours right for tv was a real obstacle… and they didn’t turn out quite as well as we had hoped.
I for one am willing to pay quite a bit more for the book if there are video tutorials included as well… Thanks for your efforts man!
Eivind G.Sorry, I only now managed to see that you’ve already stated that the book will come with a source CD.
chrisThanks – and yes it is still available – and due to its ever-growing popularity, it will be for some time. It was, at one time and may still be, one of the most popular resources on devnet. Due to the Adobe merger the URL was recently changed to:
http://adobe.breezecentral.com/p46515568/
I keep all links to all articles and breeze presentations under the “Flash Articles” section in the Links category.
-c
chrisEivind,
thanks for your comments – yeah there will be an included disc. I will also talk about Flash to video (color safe pallettes) as well. The CD will include source files to some of my characters so you will be able to have the actual source FLAs
Thanks again.

Robert NavasHey Chris, your book sounds incredible just how you say it´s going to be, I´m waiting for it very much and I´m sure it´s gonna be amazing. I think you can include some cool things and interaction that you can make using simple buttons and animation, just like your site of wines (¿how you make that the animation starts when you rollover the bottle of wine and just when you rollout starts another animation that starts when the previous ends?), or cool things like the official site of the movie “Corpse Bride”. Well, many thanks for all your articles I think I don´t missed any of them
cherThat was a great vid! I’ve used it, or the techniques in it to create all my characters for my masters project, thanks! Any chance you have something similar for lyp syncing?
chrisThanks and yes – already listed in the “Flash Articles” section:
http://adobe.breezecentral.com/p48069653/?launcher=false&skip-survey=true
cherThanks so much! Sorry for the brain fart, andnot being able to find it. LOL I found the aritcle on the macromedia site but the link was dead. It’s working now… Anyway, thanks so much. I’ll send you a link when I’m done.
Let me know when you’re book is out!
cher
chrisno problem cher. There are 2 books – one is with Colin Smith for Peachpit Press and is due out this summer – I will blog it for sure. The other book is all me and won’t be out for about 12 months from now as I am just starting the actual writing process now. Again, this will be the best place to get the inside scoop

saulApart from working for/with adobe/macromedia on this project, are there other reasons why you would use captivate over camtasia?
chrisNo specific reasons. I use Cantasia as well and I like both. I have no preference over one or the other. Captivate being a *Macrodobe* product has the edge over Camtasia. No other reason – they are both great products.
saulthanks! i like the term “macrodobe”
is that a foretelling of things to come?

id like to thank you for all you to do to help out all flash budding flash animators out there…ALL over the world.

your help is greatly appreciated…on a glObal scale. thanks Chris!
christhanks robert – yes, I will be adding a chapter on interactivity, geared for the designer to understand (such as myself). Really useful stuff that will help the non-coder understand how to get by with AS in Flash by applying it to animations.

Stan VassilevQuestion: is this better than what Photoshop already has in File>Scripts>Export Layers?
With that you can export all layers as a numbered PNG and import them as a sequence in Flash at once.
chrisHi Stan – that must be a CS feature. I am running 7.0 right now but my CS version is on the way to me as of this writing. The Psd2Fla will launch and create the layered Fla in 1 single command from the File>Export menu in P’shop. So in that sense it may be easier. The cost is pretty high in my opinion and the only reason I purchased it is because I needed it for a high profile project which has the budget, but also because I am working with over 100 layers across several PSD files.

Lee AllisonA couple of us are in the process of building this URL in Flash!
We appreciate your work and use it as an example of how it should be!
The first issue of our magazine has just come off the presses on May 15 ready to be shipped to all parts of the world! We ( a number of us) over the next few weeks will be visiting every state and territory in the Union and every part of the world where a US Military Base will be found. We may need several shirts because each of us will go in different directions of the compass simultanously. But the results will be pics from almost every corner of the globe! More over we would love to have your suggestions and input on the web site! Lee Allison

alcI was working in flash and it stopped responding to my request to change the single frame the symbol was displaying. I gave up trying and decided to look on keyframer for some new things – this tutorial had the exact fix for what I was looking for! Thanks Chris and Dave!! Big Help!
NaghamI actually want to do that myself…I found this tutorial online called ‘Flashification’, and you basically create the layout in Photoshop (I used Illustrator and exported the design to photoshop) and then slice it up and save the slices as images and then import them into flash- I’m still in the process of doing that, so I don’t know if that gives the sames results as what you’re looking for….can you animate those images in flash later on?!
DavidDoesn’t Moho already do this?

rskaeh I was see a flash video where u work on this animation with details and steps, now I cant find it T_T can u help me?
chrisDavid,
yes it does – but there are many advantages to having this kind of tool in Flash. The biggest is that in all my years and the hundreds of projects I have worked on, most have been with various teams and almost every single team has shared Flash files. Not one single project has anyone ever said “Let’s use MOHO!”
IMO, MOHO has a quirky UI and I simply do not have the time to learn the program right now. Not taking anything away from it of course – but Toon Boom Solo has IK and also Glue as well – which blows away any plugin for Flash – but in the end, it is the sharing of FLA files that is prevalent with each and every client project (at least in my neck of the woods).-c
chrisYay Willo! Cool stuff girl – glad it helped.
xoxo
PatI find it easy just to use a script i made that lets me export each layer to a seperate PNG with full transperencies… Much simpler and easier to use.. Even has a trim feature!

willoI’ve been a longtime fan of Nina Paley. I saw her speak years back at the local college here & also ended up emailing back & forth with her about doing Flash for TV when I was working on the ‘Ridiculous Julia’ interstitials for broadcast. I have great respect for the work she’s doing around overpopulation. Did you see her short “Thank You for not Breeding”? Good work there & a great message.

darkerravagercongratulations chris!! as others said your work deseves recognition
AllyDear rska,
I know what video your talking about. Open Flash and go to “Help” at the top and scroll to “Samples.” It will open a safari page, once it has opened the Safari page scroll to the bottom and click on “More Samples.” When you are there you will see a menu to the right somwhere in there you need to click on “3D Animation.” Scroll through to about middle of the page. All the way to the far left you will see the little person’s head click on the pop-out text next to it. Scroll down to below the picture of the Flash screen and click on “Watch the presentation.” And let the page load andit will set up so that you can watch it.

BrianHi Chris,
Absolutely love the idea that you are thinking of publishing a book. I can’t wait until it is out. There are very few books out there on cartoon animation specifically aimed at Flash cartoon animation. I have found your tips and tricks so helpful in the few tutorials I have come across. Look forward to seeing it soon!
A fanNina Paley’s “Fetch” rocks! I recently saw it in a Frederator podcast. It totally blew me away. I could only imagine (and appreciate) the time and energy it took to produce that piece. Nuff respect!

GlennTry a Toshiba M7 TabletPC. Cheaper than a Cintiq, and while it’s doesn’t have quite as many degrees of pressure, it is pretty damn responsive and great to draw with (and far cheaper than a Cintiq). It’s solid and has the only decent screen resolution of any TabletPC out there. It uses the same Wacom technology as the Cintiq.
As a must-have accessory, the Cintiq 18ux pen — much better than the toshiba supplied stylus.
I know this may be heresy to a Mac user (if you are one), but it’s a damn cool machine, especially for drawing or 3d work. I use both, and I love my M4 (one step down from the newer M7) — but I would buy an Apple tablet in a second if they would just release the damn thing. Maybe this September…probably not.

Robert MirabitoHey Chris,
You probably already know that the swf file for the Hula girl in both IE6 and Opera 9 don’t render correctly. The width breaks the layout. Works ok in Firefox 1.5.07. Unfortunately I don’t have any tips on how to fix it.

Stefan de GrootHey Chris!
You’re also a drummer!
I heard a little Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl in there!
Wow that Mic has a great range! I also bought a mic like that and it makes all the difference. It records all the characteristics of the sound. When you record voices or sound effects it picks up all the little nuances, which is a big plus!
I love your blog, sites and tutorials. Keep up the great work!Stefan
JackieThese are almost the same sliders we used to animate South Park when Warren and I worked on the show. I’ve been trying to find a way to animate like that again with Flash. Now I can. I just purchased the plugin and have been using it all week. Such a simple concept but a huge time-saver. Great investment. Thanks Warren!
jpIt’s the first time I see an animated tutorial of this quality. Thank you so much. Which tools can be used to make such incredible tutorials?
chrisjp, thanks. That presentation was done during a live Breeze meeting – it was recorded so what you are seeing is something that was recorded live.
Jonas (nor)I just wanna tell everyone who wants to learn flash and/or show their own work to join up, it’s an awesome forum! Congrats Chris!
BenChris, I think that’s a real handy effect, but not necessarily ‘what the people want’. I’m guessing that the majority of forum posters were looking for an animation tutorial on masking the text by the strokes, so we would see three lines drawn for the ‘H’ in hand, etc. I’m also guessing that this effect is a pain in the a-hole, requiring probably hours of shape tweening. In conclusion, I’m guessing there’s no easy way to create a ‘real’ writing effect.
Also, you didn’t talk about your second method of creating this effect. How does that go?
chrisBen – your comment came a few minutes too soon – i just completed the article by adding the 2nd technique – which is much easier than you might think
![]()
-chris
JasonI use a similar technique to #2, but I use a mask and start at the beginning. Works well, but I don’t see any benefits to either technique.
BenChris, what are the advantages/disadvantages to using a fireworks blur vs. using the flash 8 blur filter?
chrisThis article was written pre-flash 8, so the advantage of having Flash 8 is, you don’t have to use use another program like Fireworks. I will be updating this article or at least writing a new one soon
![]()
The Real BenSometimes the built in Flash blur can slow down the player more than using a pre-blurred bitmap from an external program. The down side of using bitmaps is it takes up more space in your project file (because you’ve already got the vector artwork in the project, and if you were blurring it in Flash it wouldn’t take up more space). But if size isn’t a problem, then using another program to do the blurring can still be a better option. Although you can’t do the really nice bluring transitions you can do with AS or motion-tweening with the Flash blur.
So it’s worth experimenting and considering both techniques.
GabrielI tried to download the sample file but all I get is a IKmotion_trial.mxp file which i cannot extract or install. I also don’t have a plug-in directory within my Flash folder. So how am i supposed to install this thing? Any tips? Any help will be appreciated. I really need to get this thing working.

chrisgabriel – MXP is the flash extension – it is opened/installed with the Extension Manager that comes with Flash. You should only have to double click it to install it – if you don’t have the EM installed – go back to your install CD – or go to Adobe.com and look for it.

allparis135Paris Hilton had sex with her new boyfriend in a portable toilet, it has been claimed.
The hotel heiress is alleged to have got hot and steamy with new lover Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos in the unlikely love den at an exclusive Hollywood party.
According to reports, the pair spent the evening kissing and groping each other before sneaking into one of the loos to get frisky.
Meanwhile, Paris was reportedly overheard fuming into her mobile phone “she’s a jealous, ugly, anorexic idiot” – sparking rumours over which one of her celebrity enemies she was describing.
The sexy star, who recently split from fiance Paris Latsis, was reportedly heard spouting the torrent of insults as she got out of a limousine in New York last week.
Speculation is now rife Paris could have been talking about either teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen or former best friend, and ‘Simple Life’ co-star, Nicole Richie.

bensw-eet. Nicely done. I watched NickJr once. I fell asleep, but still, nicely done!
Are all dora, blues clus etc all done with F L A S H?
chrisThanks ben – if you ever want to know what is flash and what is not – hover over the content with your cursor and right click – if it is flash, it will say it in the popup context menu.
LuisWow, i’ve been amazed at how so many things i saw when I was smaller were made in Flash, and now I’m actually using the program. it’s incredible i just love Flash 8 its filters!
Anyways, it was very well done!
Good job!

GabrielI realized that i had the old version of flash. I got the new one (trial version) now and it works fine. Thanks for the help though.

DanHey Chris- I attended your class on Thursday morning- thanks for making me think about expanding my use of Flash! Didn’t even realize you were in the Wow Flash book I bought at the Peachpit until I was looking through it this morning. Cool! Also cool to see that you’re a musician- not surprising.

Glenn GervaisHi Chris,
I attended your Thursday morning session too. Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge and source files. It’s not easy to find someone so willing to share their talents, especially someone of your caliber.
Glenn
RayI also attended your thursday morning session at the max confrence. I absolutely loved it. The majority of the others that attened the confrence with me, from my work, seemed to enjoy the more tech savvy sessions but blaaaaa. I am just a youngen and got lucky by landed a small animation job in chattanooga, the only problem would be that I know absoultely nothing about animation only illustration. Luckily the people that hired me are good friends and rather desprate. So basically what I was wonderingwould it be possible to see some more examples of how to put it togeter (.fla) or something like that? Again THANKS SO MUCH!
chrisThanks Ray – glad you liked it. Best bet to learn more is to see the tutorials section of this site:

there is one in particular called “Character Design & Animation Tutorial”

LeightonThanks a lot mate, it’s people like you that can really help beginners by sharing your knowledge. This tip came in really handy and i will probably use it on all my opening scenes. Thanks again!
Mashook Hussain Talpuri am also experiencing the same problem with Flash-8 Blur filter effect as it slow-downs my Windy-Smoky clouds animation.
I have got a great idea for my first-ever personal portfolio website but it seems impossible to implement only because of this slow-down speed problem as most of the users on the web might not be able to enjoy my website because of this slow-down issue.I also cannot try the Fire-Works blur technique because that wont generate the true Smoky-Clouds animation as can be done in Flash.
I beg you all part of this forum, if you can please helo me out by suggest anyother technique or way of doing it in Flash. I would really be grateful for it… PLEASE
LuisNice Chris, great plugin for Mozilla. I just downloadedit and it rocks. There is also a good extension called FireFTP. It’s a FTP program integrated in Mozilla! I use it and It’s better than having a separate program.

LuisHi!
Yeah, you’re welcome! Hope you find it useful!
Thanks againg for the plugin!

chrisMashook Hussain Talpur – it depends on the actual style of smoke you are after – which sounds very realistic – so in your case it will probably be fairly processor intensive – I would swing by the keyframer forum (www.keyframer.com/forum) and ask there – it is very actuve and you will get a lot of response from several different opinions.
chrishi sham,
when you say you “want” it – what do you mean? it’s there for you to read – i provided the link to it in the blog entry:

SteveHi Chris,
Have you ever thought about presenting in Australia?
chrisSteve – going to australia would be awesome! It always comes down to time and how much i can find to travel that far. I have been invited to places all over the world (Singapore, Mexico, etc…) but I am literally booked for months in advance and it is hard to plan trips like this. Max and Flash Forward are easy because flights are never more than 5-6 hours and i can always fly in for a night if need be. But i would surely think about a trip to australia someday

chrisThanks Stefan, yeah i have a lot of varied influences as a drummer over the years (decades?!). Everyone from Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Stewart Copeland, etc…
After too many years out of the music industry (to focus on animation), I may soon be re-entering as the drummer for an up and coming blues band in the New York/Connecticut area. More to come about that…
chrisupdate to this post – i changed the sample recording from my drumming to Andrea singing (to avoid future confusion if you are returning).
dave schlafmanThere’s something creepy about the animation and characters…It’s too real-looking. The animation is nice, but they should have just used video.
chrisHi Dave – interesting point – jib jab has clearly been perfecting their style – the animation is technically brilliant. For me, this was more fun to watch then if it were shot live action with real actors. It’s quirkiness visually compliments Weird Al’s song writing style (imo).

Angela RobertsHey, I have been looking into mic’s. I am a newbie animator (I mean real new—I am a stay at home mom) and happened upon your site while doing research. I was so impressed with the sound of your daughter I wanted to look into it. I was wondering what you are using (pre-amp) to connect to your computer.
This afternoon I get to use the ToonBoom Solo demo…I am excited

I really appreciate your time!!!

RobertHey Chris, what a nice animation!, the most i like is, I think the black and white feel of the Andrea cartoons, makes me remember the past great times of the animation and how simple was in that times, but who knows why, it makes you see it, over and over again. Your Andrea animation is just like the same feeling. Great work!!
smidgetChris: Oh gawd. About 2-3 days to get everything she wants or she’ll be one unhappy Andrea.

A series on Meagan (or was it Nathan) the fish’s life would be cool! Haha
Nice
GGChris,
I’m sure I will not be disappointed in the book. It’s nice to see a modest flash animator who knows how to animate and responds to emails. I’ve emailed a few who never respond. I’m a fan who appreciates that. I’ve seen your tutorials on Macromedia/Adobe so I already know that I won’t be disappointed.
GessieExcellent tutorial. This has inspired me greatly, thanks alot.

ChuckChris,
Sounds like great fun! I just finished my first professional flash animation for a client and wanted to thank you for sharing all of your knowledge. It helped quite a bit (I would show it to you but my contract has me under NDA). Certainly the first time was very much a learning experience, fortunately I got paid for it! Hopefully I’ll be able to attend the next flashforward and see you speak. Keep up the hard work.
CharlieI was in your FlashFoward session on Monday, but I walked in late so I didn’t get to hear how I could obtain your source files for the animations you were sharing. Could you e-mail me the link or send me the files???
Thank you for the session and especially for sharing the stories from your college days that helped us to see where you’re coming from and what your motivation is.
GGChris,
I assume from seeing some of your pics on the net that you use windows.

I assume since you went to Macworld that you are a mac user.
Which do you use primarily, windows or mac?
Which do you prefer?
I assume mac since you went to Macworld.
I’m still a fan if you use a mac.
GGI think I already know the answer.
I remember Apple’s website showing your dog icon (I think) on their website in their software area and advertising flash.
You mentioned on an old thread about it being cool.
chrisHi GG,
to the surprise of many, I am all PC – but for no other reason than the fact that Flash has always performed noticeably faster and smoother on PC (authoring and player performance). Now that Macs are Intel based, I am curious to see how the next version of Flash will perform. I would love to add a Mac to my arsenal of tools. Being cross-platform would have its advantages.
PCs have a number of 3rd party applications that are simply not available for Macs. I use several of these kinds of programs to extend Flash.
So, I have nothing against either platform – to me it’s like Ford vs Chevy.

EricWelcome Back Chris.
I added a comment when you first posted this but for some odd reason it didn’t take.
Take 2:
Looks like you had a fun time, what a life you have. I wish I could be a celebrity like you
.
Thanks for teaching me how the 49er’s got their name, very interesting… I love it.
BikefitterLOL! Wiki This! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Gold_Rush
“7×7=49″, while of course true, is a nice bit of designer style revisionist history.
It is estimated that almost 90,000 people arrived in California in 1849 — about half by land and half by sea.[39] Of these, perhaps 50,000 to 60,000 were Americans, and the rest were from other countries.[34] By 1855, it is estimated at least 300,000 gold-seekers, merchants, and other immigrants had arrived in California from around the world.[40] The largest group continued to be Americans, but there were tens of thousands each of Mexicans, Chinese, French, and Latin Americans,[41] together with many smaller groups of miners, such as Filipinos and Basques.[42] A modest number of miners of African ancestry (probably less than 4,000[43]) had come from the American South, the Caribbean and Brazil.[44]
chrisThanks Bikefitter! Funny, I had thought that the Goldrush did in fact have something to do with the football team’s name – but some of the history I learned was that the gold rush started in 1848. Then someone in San Fran told me it was because the city itself is 7 square miles.
I stand corrected after reading the wiki page. Off to edit my entry now.
Thanks again.

Scott JanousekChris, does this group have a website or blog?
Gene HarmonHey Chris
I love your work (P.S. do you still have the desktop pet for the dog out there?) Do you do much action scripting and do you think that all flash designers should be able to write code to be successful?
chris“Chris, does this group have a website or blog?”
Yes they do Scott, but it’s password protected and not very available to the public. They tell me they are thinking of building a public site soon.“…do you still have the desktop pet for the dog out there?) Do you do much action scripting and do you think that all flash designers should be able to write code to be successful?”
Hi Gene, the desktop dog needs to be added back into the site. During the last site update he got shelved temporarily. I simply have been too busy to add him back – but I will and possibly with more animations.
I do some AS – basic stuff like loadMovie and gotoAndPlay functionality. Anything more and I consult with friends who specialize in this area.
I do not think a designer needs to know programming to be successful – I am proof of that – I couldn’t code my way out of a wet paper bag, but I do seem to get by. I used to think I needed to learn AS, but a friend who is a great programmer (Urami) said to me once that there’s no need for someone with my skillset to learn it when there are so many who code very well and can help.
She has proven herself to be right. Many of the projects I am involved in that require programming, have a coder designated for such task.
On the other hand, if you can do both really well, you are a double threat, and that can only help you.-c
LuisHi
Well I wish I could’ve checked out the meeting but anyways I bet it must have been really amusing and of course interesting. I agree with Chris, no need really to be a Actionscript master, all you need is pure skill like Chris’.Great website!

Nick LamphereHi all.
Chris, thanks again for presenting to our group. It was one of the best attended to date!
Despite the *relatively* boring educational Flash stuff everyone would think, there is much interesting and creative work going on here. Although, having Chris come in to present certainly helped the creative juices flow…Ed, thanks for helping to coordinate, buying pizzas and great prizes – the backpack especially caught my eye.

Donna AckersonYou have an awesome site and the best insight , comments, and tutorials on the web. I used to work for a studio out in California and I am a long time Flash user and old school key animator. I would love to buy this shit but guys T’s look horrible on me. If I paid extra could I get a “girls T” (also in orange) instead? Keep up the good work…and I’ll try to get some guys to buy your T in the mean time. Must try and support the faith. Heh.
chrisHi Donna!
The keyframer store is severely lacking in female attire – I must get on that – I will try and make one now…
Colin SmithIt was fun catching up with you Chris. Next time hopefully I’ll be there in time for your session!
robertexactly what I was looking for! any way to do this in actionscript, so its easier to modify/change colors, letters…something I can reuse…?
Luis FelipeI have heard of Anime Studio but never seen much of it. Now with this it looks like its a very powerful tool just like Flash!
The animation is ‘rubbery’ and interestng. I live the first part! then of course the flop-throw-catch is very well animated too.
Good work!
Luis
Luis FelipeI just checked your link to ANime Studio and I’m completly amazed at how the Anime Studio(not Pro) is only around 50 EUR! And it also comes ith the free Kayia.
I saw some animations made with Anime Studio and I was completly bewildered!

Luis FelipeWow, awesome!
I read the their page and its only $150 or less! It must be awesome to keep financial stuff and see animations. Also see images like they said!
I wonder if we’ll ever get one of those!

David JenningsHi, yeah I would have loved to have seen IK support. I see after effects has the “puppet tool” – looks really cool would have been great to see it in Flash. So far I’m resisting doubling my upgrade price by getting the master pack :/
chrisThe puppet tool looks awesome! I cant wait to play with that. It looks just like the Bones and Image Warp feature in Anime Studio (which is just as much fun as the Lathe tool in Swift 3D).
![]()
chrisrobert, you can use AS – see this:
http://keyframer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=478
EricOMG the puppet tool in AE is wicked cool Chris. I wonder when they will do something similar for flash.
chrisEric,
I have my own agenda this year to get some kind of IK feature in flash – they (adobe) almost has to add it to keep up with other 2D animation programs.
G SinghI really like it. I want to know what kind of camera is that(pic 3). I really like to work with flash but I can’t draw.
Luis FelipeAwesome! I saw the whole introduction to CS3 and I was completly bewildered and amazed!
I totally love it!
Yeah the puppet tool was totally 100/10 lol! I loved the Premiere CS3 slow-mo effect too!
I really want Flash to have that feature!
Bobin CherianWow… looks amazing. I want to be able to draw that well, but then I can’t, so then I ease myself saying tht its cause I dont have a Wacom yet… ny tips on gettin better?
chrisG Singh: That’s not a “camera” but rather a title and action safety graphic.
chrisBobin Cherian: are you asking for tips on how to draw better with a mouse? Use the Pen tool – Pen tools were invented before graphics tablets were invented specifically to aid in the process of drawing with a mouse.
imjeef1535haha, thats pretty funny. i like the system requirements.

KarlGoogle offering wireless broadband service isn’t too surprising. I expected Google to make a move in ISP filed for a while, especially dedicated Internet access lines. WayToonWOW I’ll be the firsts to buy it! Great Chris
RyaninjaYes, hurry please, I want to read it too!

Is there a rough date yet, or is it just “when it’s finished”?
GGIt’s about “FREAKIN’” time. I almost have a hole burning in my pocket because I thought I couldn’t wait to use an Amazon.com gift certificate. I plan on buying the book and maybe another one at the same time.
chrisI have a very strict date as to when I need to deliver all chapters to my publisher. From there it goes through the process of printing (whatever that means) and there is also a CD included which has source files for almost every topic. The book right now, pending any delays, is scheduled for release August 6. I’ll be updating you all here as we get closer to that date.
WarrenG1, Chris! I’m really looking forward to this book!
Justin WegWoo hoo! Let’s get it on! I can’t wait! I really really really hope there is lots of character animation stuff in there, and hopefully different material than you have done in your online articles. Either way, I look forward to it! Good luck Chris!
patzohi chris,
is it easy to tell us about the price?
i’m a student and i need time to collect money in order to buy it.
thanks
chrisThanks Justin – I think you will be pleased by the contents of the book topics. There is similar stuff to my online articles but also a lot of additional material. You will also get source files for nearly every topic on the included CD. Some topics/techniques simply can not be described different from what I have already written – like my article on Flash to video – but all in all, this book represents almost everything I know when it comes to using Flash.
patzo – the publisher will detirmine the price and i think it will be around $30-$40 US. I will post more info to the blog as we get closer to the release date.
-chris
Ryan“but all in all, this book represents almost everything I know when it comes to using Flash”
Excellent. Once I have assimilated this information, I shall be ever more closer to world animation domination! Bwahahahahaaa!
patzothanks chris!!! i’ve already started collecting money.
i’m looking forward to its’ publish
chrisMy book is part of a series (”How to Cheat in…”). Search amazon for How to Cheat in Photoshop (Steve Caplin) to get an idea of pricing. Steve’s book is great btw.
RobertWow, just to see the cover design I realize that I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
animokI look forward to getting this book, I have the Photoshop version and its great. I love the cover design Chris, it really jumps out.
chrisThanks for all the comments on the cover! I really wanted to design a cover that stood out and was instantly recognizable (marketing 101). I spent a long time on this cover and I actually like it (I rarely like my own stuff). So often books have lame cover designs. Glad to hear my book is getting the thumbs up in the department – let’s hope we can judge a book kby its cover this time around

MrzeeTUX!
Great job with the videos.
What program are you using to capture the screen?
I’d love to take some of my lessons to this format for thephotoshopprofessor website.
Congrats on the achievement!
Larry RainsThis looks Awesome dude! Congratulations on this Chris your a very talented guy. I’ll make sure I pick up a copy when it’s released.
You’ll do good with this bro. : )
ColterI can’t wait Chris, I’ll definitely be buying it!
MarkPever played video games back in the day? they always said : CHEATERS DONT WIN
so why should i “win” when i cheat in flash. cheating isnt nice
what will the book be exactly about?
is it worth getting if you know how to use flash or is it only for people who are starting to use flash?
chrisMarkP – the term “Cheat” here isnt the same as playing a video game – “cheat” here means finding shortcuts to doing things in Flash, hopefully in ways you never knew before. The book is filled with just about everything I have ever learned about Flash over the past several years. “Cheating” here is having the advantage of a book where all these “cheats” are in one convenient place – so contrary to your own belief…cheaters do sometimes win. If you are hesitant to purchase the book then I recommend waiting until after it has been released and reading the reviews on amazon and wherever else people write reviews. You may be able to go to the local bookstore or find a friend who owns it and thumb through each page to make sure it’s for you. This book assumes you have a good knowledge of how Flash works – it is not a re-hash of the help files. I wouldn’t tell a newbie not to buy it either. It is what it is.
ronJust trying to find out about your opinion on the help file system in CS3. I have purchased the CS3 web design suite and I am very disappointed in the help files that came with the product. They only appeared to be a one-third the information that was in Studio 8 and MX2004. The video workshop files as tutorials are of such poor video quality, that they are next to nothing. Any code, headers, text are not discernable. I really think the product is lacking in this area???? I have contacted everyone at Adobe and they do not seem to even care. I get bounced back and forth between Customer Service and Tech Support for about two weeks now. Can you suggest anyone at Adobe that would have an open ear for my concerns??? Love your tutorials by the way and intend to buy your new one soon as I recover from the CS3 issue. Thanks.
raduThe whole pack is amazing overall.
Maybe I was expecting a little bit more from flash as far as animation goes. To animate cartoons, flash 8 will simply do … No reason to upgrade now…
MrzeeCHRIS!

tomerhey chris,
really looking forwerd to buying the book!
i only have one thing i need to know…doing animation in flash is a gift to me, but i use the brush tool as defult, whice tool you use to do those amazing figuers u do? the pencil tool? i really want to do animation “cartoon network style”. like, “atomic betty”, so if u could guide me to whice tool is best, i mean, after the proces of designing the figure, and going along with the animation on her.
thanks a lot!
JasonHey Chris! Nice that Flash Forward will be so close to your “house” and heart, yea? I’m going to push for my work to sponsor a trip. I’ve never been to Boston. Maybe they’ll split it with me if they’re cheap. Hope all is well with you. Take care!
chrisTomer – I think the line quality you are looking for can be achieved a couple different ways – some use Illustrator to do all the outlining then import into flash for the color. But I prefer to stay inside Flash and I use basic shapes in a weird way…best seen in action here:

PhilPERFECT! My cousin and I video chat using a flash based video chat program. When v9 player came out it disabled my cam. So I had to search high and low for v8 again. This solves everything. Wish I’d found it sooner!

EricHey Chris, this is a much more detailed vent then the one in the forum. Now I know what you are talking about.
I couldn’t agree with you more about, there doesn’t really need to be huge stars for the same profit outcome.
EricHey Chris, let me know how much cheaper it is. My wife and myself did the 100 dollar comcast 3 month plan but as soon as that deal was over we are paying almost double that for telephone, tv, and internet. We hardly use our phone and that is about 50 dollars a month. What a rip off.
chrisEric, the package deal is $99 per month for all (TV, internet and phone). I have a 2nd phone line so I pay more of course – so it is cheaper and it’s faster than comcast – FIOS has two speed packages and their slowest speed is still faster than comcast. You can opt for the really super fast internet but of course you pay a lot more. Also, it may or may not be available in your town.
RobertWow Chris, congratulations!! for finish the book, I can’t wait to read it!
danComcast uses fiber optic technology too. DSL and Verizon phone service use copper.
chrisdan – interesting – why does Comcast not mention that on their site or advertise that they use fiber optics? Maybe in only a few small areas right now?
chrisHi Eric, yeah I had some time on my hands yesterday since I had some down time while switching ISPs.
![]()
EricYeah because for comcast, they connect into a co-axle cable (tv cable) for the internet, last I looked at mine and last time I installed one of these cables it was copper on the inside. I guess they use FiOS in different areas.
DrewActually, I’d have to say I disagree.
The right voice talent- whether previously successful in “complete” roles or not- makes a huge impact to the character. The things Mike Meyers brought to Shrek, for example, are a big part of the reason the kids enjoy him as a character.
Remember, the actors in these roles do not watch finished animation and try to synch up their voices to the lip motions they see. They develop characters with the script, the writers, producers and directors to bring those characters to life- very much the way they do in live-action pieces. Only then do they record the tracks and scenes, and that informs the animators and directors on the final product. A lot of give and take goes on in the process.
The actor injects a lot more (depending on the style of direction) into that character than just the audio of their vocal chords vibrating in tune to the script.
Who else but Jeremy Irons, for an example that goes way back, should have voiced Scar in the Lion King? Are you saying these non-traditional voice-actors do such a poor job?
They also contribute to the “gatekeeper” effect of parents who take their kids to (yet another) made-for-kids entertainment and get to enjoy hearing actors they know, doing things they are known for- even if it is missed on the kids. This may well account for the box-office challenge you mention at the end of your post.
I’ll bet it does make a difference.
chrisDrew – good point but not the point I am trying to make – often actors do a great job when voice acting for animated character roles (Ellen Degeneres in Nemo for example). My point was that the target audience (children) don’t care (for the most part) if it Bruce Willis or somebody completely unknown in Hollywood. But all too often these films over saturate the credits with big name actors for the sake of…well…marketing? We as parents aren’t choosing to see these movies by ourselves – we are taking our children because of the content – not the voices. Although there are always exceptions to the rule but overall, previews that brag about the cast as if it makes a difference to the children has always seemed a little odd to me.
David StillerChris, as ever, bro, it was great working with you!
I always enjoy the late-night rapid-fire idea slinging. Woo-hoo, time for some sleep!
chrisThanks David – well I spoke too soon – just got the revisions back from the proof readers – I am afraid to look :p
DaveThere is definitely a difference between casting for type than going purely for the biggest name the studio can snag. That for me is the real problem here… an actor that fits the role (the great example of Jeremy Irons and Scar above or Robin Williams as the Genie from Aladdin) where their screen persona is a benefit to the character are good choices. But shoehorning a top male/female lead into a role for what can only really be marketing reasons is where the trouble starts. Some studios realize this more than others (praise to Pixar in the main) – I mean could you imagine say anyone other than Craig T Nelson as Mr Incredible?
To a certain extent I think the famous voices thing comes from what the animation director hears in his head when he is thinking of certain roles, and they are bound to think of actors as like casting a regular movie these people are their point of reference. So it may not all be about marketing… but maybe thats wishful thinking.
DaveI love the horse. I haven’t had a chance to download the CS3 version yet but I was wondering would this be a problem on more complex textures (with the solid grey its not an issue). Or is it smart enough to deal with that.?
chrisIt’s smart – in fact you may not even need to separte out parts to different images/layers – depends on the image and animation of course – my next experiment may be with textures.
Davidmmm…. all i’m seeing is a white box – no animation
Just reinstalled flash 9 player, still nothing
chrisDavid – not a player version issue – I left out a forward slash in the code – so for some viewers/browsers the code was no finding the right folder for the SWF. Thanks for letting me know – should be fixed now.
Dave DAwesome!! I can’t wait to experiment with that feature, and I was really hoping the new Flash would have something like that as well. Great character design!
RobertHey Chris, what a nice horse cycle, and so you say that you did in one hour!, wow that is pure speed… Also you think Adobe’s has plans to add this puppet tool feature to Flash in some near future?
chrisHi Robert,
as far as a tool like this in Flash goes…I legally can’t say yes or no – in fact, I can’t say anything at all. I personally have begged for this feature straight to the people who would make the decision to develop it – to be honest, it amazes me that Flash, one of the most popular animation tools on the market, does not already have this feature – it is almost a sin. let me just say that many people feel this tool should be implemented – I can’t say who those people are and if they have any influence on something like this happening – so…I will just end it here before a rumor starts – BUT, if and when it does happen and I am allowed to say something – you will hear about it first here
But that’s not what I’m saying – at all – legally anyway…sort of. I wouldn’t know – because I don’t know anybody who knows anything about whatever it is we’re talking about…at all. What was the question?

SteveI also wish Adobe would improve the brush in Flash to act more like the one in Illustrator. I’ve found nothing like it for inking with a Wacom.
http://brian-romero.blogspot.com/2007/02/digital-inking-basics.html
Flash’s brush has nowhere near as much control.Any inside info on that feature, Chris?
ps: the horse is awesome!
Dr. Woohoo!chris;
/*
that’s beautiful and inspiring. it appears there is motion blur on the tail and legs – i’m assuming that’s done in AE? i’m assuming the anchor points are keyframed?
*/woohoo!
MarkPawesome feature. i never figured out how anime studio works but the example that comes with it is cool. yeh i wish flash had this feature but then i prefer doing everything frame by frame. playing around with such a thing and being done in one hour. i dont know but to me that seems like a LONG time for such an animation. yeh you might call me lazy which i probably am but i think i could do this frame by frame in 45 minutes- oh great i saved 15 minutes haha
anyways im only saying i prefer to do everything frame by frame and have full control of what im doing rather than using some strange filters or any animation tricks some software offers
chrisHi MarkP – FBF rocks and I’m sure you’re really good at it – the Puppet tool is not a filter – it’s basically an IK and image warp feature rolled into one single tool. You have complete control over how it works.
The hour it took me included exporting from Flash as PNGs and importing them into After Effects. I will be the first to admit I am not a traditional animator so my skill level at animating a horse galloping in 45 minutes just won’t happen – too difficult for me as i tend to be a perfectionist – to a fault admittedly![]()
vpadaqYou may let out a mart safe house motorcycle boots was still cold.
EricI downloaded the trial version of AE and boy was this tool fun. So easy to get the hang out too. I took this robot character I made and then took the separate parts and exported them as pngs. Then I imported them like Chris has said and BAM, I was animating in seconds. I like the puppet tool because it gives it a 3D quality. I would say it is more like a 2.75 D. Not that 2.5D Chris talks about but it seems a little bit more than just that. Thanks Chris for sharing this tool.
MarkPyeh overall it looks very awesome. i mean look at the connection of the body and the neck. you couldnt do that in flash with motion tweens or even shape tweens unless you dont have black outlines but the outlines are connected here and they just get expanded. it just sounds great and a good way for people who cant do a fbf animation- with cant i mean 1) they havent gained a certain skill level yet or 2) they are using a mouse. im not saying a tablet makes everything way easier but certainly WAY faster. i wouldnt want to do any fbf animation with a mouse. ive done so and it just takes so much time while i can do a lot of stuff with my tablet- in an alright ammount of time. while with a mouse youll spend some time on a single illustration and wouldnt it be great if a program could help you with adding live to this character- with this plug in or new feature or whatever it is you finally can. forget about the standard limb tween. oh and you know what my animations are like in case you visit your own forum and i know you do so you know im a crappy animator haha
gregHi Chris,
Adobe’s LiveDocs description says the Puppet Tools can be applied to vector graphics as well as raster images. Is there a reason why you exported your horse as .png (raster) instead of .eps or .ai (vector) files? I’m sure you know how useful it would be to go from Flash to AE for this tool, and then back to Flash, keeping everything in vector format.
Just curious, as I haven’t DL’d the trial version to give this a whirl yet.
chrisHi greg,
yeah i need to do more tests in this regard – i did import an swf of just a circle made with the Oval tool in Flash and used the puppet tool on it. In AE’s export settings I chose not to render as JPG format (thinking this would keep it all vector). The rendered file contained no animation. When I tried again and selected JPG format the animation rendered with the export file but, as expected, was a bitmap sequence. I still need to test this though – I had motion blur on which may force the bitmap fomat on export. More tests to come, but all in all, yeah, exporting to vector would make life even better.-c
gregChris-
I played around with it a little. It looks like PuppetTool-amatizing vector art bakes it out into rasters, which sort of makes sense considering the triangulated deformation mesh the tool generates. I confirmed this by exporting (not rendering) .swf’s, selecting “Rasterize” and “Ignore” for the unsupported swf features in each case. The animation only appeared when “Rasterize” was selected.
So this pretty much puts the kibosh on the Flash->AE->Flash workflow I was hoping for. Too bad. Still a cool tool, though.
Hey, next time you have your secret Adobe friends who you can’t talk about on the line, ask them for something like Illustrator’s Envelope Distort by Mesh tool to be put in AE. Having pins, starch, and a timeline for this would be great. I’d imagine the overlap bit would be near impossible, though.
chrisgreg – thanks – those are exactly my findings as well. As for the requested feature – I may one-up you on that, but I am not at liberty to utter a single word right now. Good things might be coming in the future for us that I think you and I will be very excited about – perhaps a year or so from now.
(nudge-nudge-wink-wink)
brian cChris-
I’m new to Flash and having a blast with it, and your video tutes are great. I have played around with Anime Studio a bit and was blown away by the bones feature. I can only hope Adobe adopts something like it for Flash, the sooner the better.
gregNDA’s are such a buzzkill.
Flash’s animation toolset hasn’t changed substantially since version 4. I’m guessing that with v.10 being the first all-Adobe build and not a residual MM product, we’ll finally see some of the true Adobe interoperability and feature sets everyone was hoping for with v.9. Looking forward to it.
SteveQuestion: How do I get a simple jumping character (movie clip created in flash) to display animated in AE, so that I can zoom in or out (or dissolve into it) without the motion stalling like it does in flash? When brought into AE, there is no motion.
AE’s help viewer says: “When After Effects imports a SWF file, its internal keyframes are preserved so that you can continue to use them for timing other effects.” ??
The swf files I import into AE look fine – except for symbols which have looping animation built into them. They stay static. Sorry to be such a newbie but… please help.
chrisSteve – convert it from MC to Graphic behavior – then export from Flash

EricHey Chris, Welcome Back. You seem to have had a fun time. I live 4 hours from NYC and I have only been a long time ago on family vacation and school trips. I need to go over there with my wife and see me some theater.
Your reel is amazing. How did you animate that Mouse looking thing?
chrisWillo: thanks!
Mrzee: yeah, I had plans to contact Fran and an animator named Joe Corrao I work with but was unable to because I was simply too busy with the conference and family. Next time.
vishvas khanna: Thanks. Top secret animation? Not sure what that refers to.
Eric: Thanks! The “mouse” is Piper O’Possum from Nick Jr. – Little Airplane (NYC) is a production company that animates him and they asked me to do some animation tests. The character is a bunch of bitmaps imported into flash – then I used “cut-out” style animation.

PaulChris,
I’ve ordered your book and this DVD has some good stuff on it. Do you also cover this stuff in your book?
Thanks
chrisThanks Paul! The DVD does cover much of what is in the book – but in video format – granted the DVD is not as exhaustive as the book is – the book covers a lot more info overall – but the DVD allows you to watch the process – depends on how you prefer to learn I suppose.
Thanks
RobertHi Chris. I’m glad to hear about the early success of your book! the only bad thing is that I have to wait a little bit more to get it
but it’s fine.
BigI’ve been waiting for this release and was happy when my local B&N said it was released on Aug 6. I went in Monday and they showed it released but no copies, bummer. I called all over today with no luck.
I’d rather pick it up myself but I guess I’ll go the pre order route as well. Make it 2,501!
WayToonCool Chris…… I love it great to see the process. Best way to learn for me.
MrZEeI just got an email from amazon asking me to approve a sep 10 delivery date
red shoeMy amazon receipt said the estimated delivery date is October 12-October 18. I am sad.
AndréHi Chris,
Your book could be very useful to me. Is there a contents / summery / preview somewhere on the web?
With compliments,
chrisHey guys – yeah this is a bummer for me also – I just emailed my publisher in hopes of getting an official word as to what is happening and why.
red shoe: that’s lame! October 12-18 is unacceptable.
Andre: there will be a companion website for the book – http://www.howtocheatinflash.com but that isn’t live yet either. I am going to find out asap what the deal is – it’s priority for me this week. Stay tuned and on behalf of whoever is responsible – I apologize.-chris
chrisOk – just heard back from the publisher regarding this issue:
“Thanks for letting me know about this. The book is now published in the UK and is due to publish any day now in the US. I don’t know why Amazon are telling its customers differently but will look into it to see if we can get them to stop as soon as possible.”
So it seems that Amazon may be sending out some sort of auto-response with an inaccurate delay date(s).
chrisAnyone who is receiving these emails from amazon – can you forward them to me asap please?

SharvoniqueI’m one of the people who pre-ordered your book. I ordered through Amazon, and I received an email on the 20th saying that the item has shipped. I’m really looking forward to it’s arrival. I only wish that I could’ve gotten an autographed copy!
AndréA friend ordered your book for me from amazon yesterday:
‘Shipping estimate for these items: August 21, 2007
Delivery estimate: September 10, 2007 – September 24, 2007′For delivery in the Netherlands..
So it still seems to take long and the estimate is rough.
Looking forward,
mikeI’m also in the Netherlands and I just received an email from Amazon.uk stating that my (pre-ordered) copy has, finally, been dispatched. I will have it by the weekend.
Can’t wait!
chrisGlad to hear they are starting to ship – the publisher told me that anyone in the US should expect the book to ship same day (from amazon). Sorry for the delays – the book sold over 2500 pre-orders which happens to be quite high and unexpected for a book of this nature.
MrZEeYAY!!!!! Recieved my book today!!!!!!!!

IanHey Chris,
I got my book last week. Looks great, I’m waiting to see the website before my review;) Seriously great stuff. So when’s the next book?![]()
JackieHey Chris,
I pre-ordered your book months ago on Amazon and got it on Saturday. I’ve read most of it so far. I sure wish I had this when I first started flash… lots of great things in there. Having worked with you before, I adopted a few of your methods, but in your book you share so many other ways of doing the same thing… different path, same result. I don’t care how many years anyone works in digital art, there are always new things to learn. This book is like looking over your shoulder and having a peek at how you streamline your work flow. I’ve already picked up a few things I’ve never known about. I’m also enjoying the interludes… you’re an inspiration and you have so much to pass on to other artists. Adobe picked a great person for this publication. I will congratulate you already for a successful book. Excellent work.
SteveBelated thanks for that tip Chris! It worked when I remembered to make that graphic symbol “loop” instead of “play once” or “single frame”.
Please let us know if Adobe has a feature wish list site for future versions of flash. I’m still wishing for a better brush tool. The one in Illustrator has been great since version 8.
AndréDelivery was much faster than Amazon predicted!
Since Chris has been so generous sharing his knowledge and tutorials on the internet, you may wonder if a book might ad much. Well it does.
Only have it for two days now, but it already proved to be very useful, interesting, clear, fun and I’m sure it will remain to be all that for a longtime.
red shoeGot mine in last week…gues the mid October-Amazon estimate was off…thank God. It is an amazing book Chris – it’s really laid out in a user friendly style, with a lot of depth.
Zeevery cool Tux!! i will be trying it out too…
you forgot the http:// on your link – when i click the pic it gotes to

chrisZee,
it’s a DELL Inspriron 9300 17″ widescreen. 2 years ago a was given a coupon for $750 off of any Dell computer – so I maxed out this laptop
It’s been a very solid machine – I bring it with me on the road as well.adam,
Nikon D80 SLR – I love love LOVE this camera – highly recommend it. Right now my only lens is the 18-135mm Nikkor – more lenses in the future for sure![]()
shunjieWee! My phone fall into a 5 meter deep water drain and now its still working (for the next few months) before it finally collapse with a broken keypad and the evils of the drain finally got to it. You are a lucky guy, but better visit the service center to do a check!
PaulI did the same thing with my Ipod Nano, however I wasn’t so fortunate. It was completely buckled and in pieces when I pulled it out of my trouser pocket. You may have voided your warranty though, theres usually some special type of paper in the back that changes color when water hits it. This will be the first thing they check.
JackieThat’s Apple for ya. I bet the president has the chemical in his pool that turns purple if you pee. Sure takes the fun out of summer… Motorolla rocks!
EricWell when my wife washed my phone and then it went into the dryer a couple years ago, the phone was destroyed. It could turn on but the display was looking to great. The store said that if it didn’t go into the dryer it would have been fine. All you have to do is wrap the phone up and take out the battery and blow dry it with a blow dryer. Once it goes into the dryer, the heat destroyed my phone. Well congrats Chris that your phone is still working… its a miracle phone.
EricChris I have a nikon D50 with the Nikkor Lens it came with. Yeah these cameras rock. Do you take it everywhere you go? You going to bring it to Flash Forward?
chrisEric, yes for the most part I bring it with me everywhere I go – I even got the battery grip for it that makes it even bigger and allows me to hold 2 batteries – I can take over 6GB of photos (RAW) without needing to charge. I will definately bring it to FF

Dee SadlerHey Chris, just got mine too yesterday. My boyfriend was drooling all over the package. I told him he couldn’t have it. (evil laugh) It’s all mine I tell ya, it’s all mine. LOL
I am showing one of your presos at next months meeting. Do you have any new ones now you have the book out? Would you consider answering questions via Connect after we watch one?

SmidgetSoooo Chris, you only had to win “who Wants to be a millionare” 70 times to get that package? Thats a good deal. LOL
Well done in scoring that lovely lookin box of goodies!
chrisDee: when is your meeting next month? Email me privately when you can. The only new videos I have recorded are available on DVD in association with photoshopcafe.com and Colin Smith – I blogged about it a few weeks ago – scroll down a bit
I will be away at the Best in the South West conference from Oct 7-15.-chris
Colin SmithApart from the fact you sound like your talking from a football field away, I would say it works
![]()
Colin SmithWell done Chris! This is an achievement for sure!
Andreas RHi, Chris! First off, congratulations on the book!
Having never touched Flash until recently, I immediately fell in love with how powerful, yet simple, it is. I found your tutorial of how to animate a character, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve always been a fan of the classic Disney movies, and animated cartoons in general, and until recently my plan was to become a concept artist.
Having discovered how much fun it is to animate your own characters, my career plan has taken a sharp turn. With this fabulous book, I’m off to a great start. It never leaves the side of my desk, where it lies right next to “The Animator’s Survival Kit” and “The Illusion of Life”. Again, congratulations and thank you for sharing your secrets. I’ll be sure to recommend your book to every Flash designer and animator I know.
Peter Woodward-CourtHey Chris! Congratulations, you totally deserve it
. Love the book, great learning resource.
All The best
Eddiehi Chris
i got the book last week. I have looked at many Flash animation books over the years and this is one of the best. (along with “Hollywood 2D Digital Animation: The New Flash Production Revolution”).
i really enjoyed the experiences you shared at the end of each chapter.
particular the one about being subtle.
congratulations Chris. well done
Eddie
RobertI’ve got one of those phones lying around in a drawer. I think the screen looked a little dirty from memory so maybe it’s time for a wash and dry!
MrzeeOk tux when do you want me to start begging. You know you need an apprentice to do your clipping paths and masking for you.
I can live in your garage and i can help you grow your empire into a flash school where i can then get a great fulltime position!
I get along with kids and animals and i put the toilet seat down when im done.
Zee
SmidgetOnly number one? I guess thats alright…
Only kidding!! (*gets smacked in head by Saturday’s Newspaper*)
Ahhh sweet work Chris! Very nice! How are the sales going? How many would have bought your book?
And, can you get your lovely book off the shelkves in any caring bookstore? In america of course…
Cheer,
–Smidget
EricChris it was a great time, I loved your session and I was glad to be part of it in your “favorite” one to date. Your Daughter was so cute. Wish we could have used a Flash at the Flash conference. (confusing huh?)
chrisSmidget: Thanks! The book is doing great on amazon – ranked around 2000 out of 2.5 million books. Yes you cen get it off the shelves – some have told me they found it at local Barnes and Noble bookstores but call first as it seems there are very few left. The books sold out at the Flash Forward conference bookstore the first hour.
-c
Peter Woodward-CourtWow Chris! That animation is amazing, you’re a real tallent. While I wasn’t at the conference, from what I’ve read about it it seems like things went great, congrats.
LukeI love this book!! It is simpley great, the the touch very good!! It took my a little while but good job!
TimI’ve been to two Flash Forward conferences so far… and this was by far the most fun… Andrea stole the show… adorable!
Let’s do it again next year!
Colin SmithA blast indeed!
Was good to catch up with you again.
(That girl is funny on Flickr!)
willoawww, how cute! i wish i could have been there to see it, too! sounds like it was a hit. yay!
xo
Mrzeehola TUX!
I was real bummed when i had to miss the flash forward conference this year! i’ve been dying to go and to see you speak would have been a blast! i just couldnt pull the days off…. i hope to see you soon though and discuss life and all!
Zee
Andy MitchellI LOVE my moo cards. People really react well to them when I pass them out.
BTW, great session at FF last week. Gave me a better perspective on animation.
JackieVery clever! What a way to make an entrance. Looks like the talent was way better than any opening for the Oscars!
EricWOW Chris… I have been obsessed with the lensbabies for a year now. I really want to get one but never had the time and money. Now looking at your photos it really wants me to get one. I’d be happy with the cheapest one because it still works great. The one you got here has the great adjusting pins and stuff. Cool stuff Chris, cool stuff.
chrisEric,
it is so addicting! I can’t put my SLR down now. Well, i never could before – but now…![]()
PaulWow, that is so cool. I just checked out the online demonstration and can’t believe how awesome it is!
MrzeeThat looks like alot of fun TUX.!!
Keep it comin!

TimCool deal… You were there in spirit….
I can’t wait to see what other filters there will be…
EricWow this is really weird… Just was reading about Hydro and then found Astro over at labs.adobe.com and while reading what Astro does I found the picture of your monkey… wow that sounded weird. I was going to post something about this so people would know about it but found it already here first.
Congrats on the publicity Chris.
Chris JonesHey, I am getting CS3 along with a new mac at the same time. Which would you recommend for running the programs, a macbook pro or imac? Plan on using flash and after effects…
Thanks,
Chris
markfirst of all its a lovely monkey. i would love to know what exactly those filters are. the first one looks like masking to me. i know adobe and i know those filters will only exist for MCs but PLEASE listen to me. animaiting with MCs isnt much fun. PLEASE make a filter support for GCs as well otherwise there is no real point.
jaysonnice, but if it only works in a swf export… then i don’t care. i work in TV so i want to be able to render in PNG sequences.. movie clips don’t play in a PNG export so they’re useless.
chrisSome really GREAT things are in store for the next version of Flash – Richard Galvan (Flash Product manager) is serious about bringing Flash back to its roots:? Animation! I am currently in New Mexico where he presented in his keynote what they are working on for Flash CS4 – Inverse Kinematics, a new way of tweening with tons of better options and better animation control. Too much to type here but I met with Richard secretly at Flash Forward in Boston where he gave me a first hand look at these new features and I can honestly say I have never been so excited about Flash in my entire life! Hang in there a little while longer folks
![]()
Henk Visser (Powetri)Hi Chris , good to see you’re doing so well. man you did some terriffic jobs again there. Just bought the whole bunch opf CS3 and you bet I’m gonna get your stuff to learn anything possible.
Right now I’m diggin into C4D which is pretty interesting too.
But my li’l videoproduction company is keeping me busy most of the time. Greetz from Powetri !
Badman_Warhawk2k8The new flash cs4 looks like its going to save animators alot of time and from the new features it looks like it has expanded its usability tremendously. I can’t wait to get it I’m saving my money for the upgrade right now and keep it in an account so when it drops booom I got it lol.
MIKEI AM INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN ANIMATION ARTIST, HOW DO I FIND JOBS LIKE YOURS, OF AN ANIMATION ARTIST?
Right Here Right NoqAny ideas as to when this upgrade/new version will ship?
chrisIt will be a while since CS3 just shipped a short time ago – typically the time between the release of full version numbers is 12-18 months – so I would say around a year from now at the most. I am certain Adobe doesn’t have a release date yet for CS4 and if they did they wouldn’t advertise it at this early stage – but I’m with you, it can’t come soon enough

DaveIs this IK tool behaving like the After Effects IK Chain (Puppet tool)? Or was this a separate development path as you say Macromedia were working on this prior to being bought by Adobe?
JackieWell this is fantastic. I use Maya, as well, and I can’t help but compare the animation tools to flash. So good to hear these new improvements in the timeline and IK.
I’m curious to know how this new IK will compare to IK’motion? I have a new project coming up that would benefit from the extension. Guess this is a good question on the forum
![]()
Thanks for the heads up!
TomI would love to see a simple Forward K tool. Rather than an over complicated bone system with all the constraints and influence issues, just a simple parent chain rotation tool would be really useful.
SydneyFXI’ve been so busy that I haven’t even used much of my Flash CS3 but I did manage to organise to go to the Adobe conference here in Sydney in a few days time to see some the sneak preview of Flash CS4. Hopefully I get find more time for Flash real soon! Keep up the good work Chris.
Perryto me its bascially like this:
Traditionists: “You mean to say I have spent thousands of hours learning an specific art that is being upstaged by these weekend workshop newbies! Come my purist friends, time for some mob mentality/brutality!”
Flashers: “Ya ok there…”
Stephen LevinsonShould you blame the keyboard for making a typo or yourself?
GleniseI love the picture that you drew for this topic!
GleniseThx Chris. I’m able to post now.
Glenise aka pcdoctor
Gary Calhoun aka WarhawkWell not everyone can afford thousands of dollars worth of equipment to record with camera. Flash makes life alot easier and you know what its still not even where it needs to be, but to say so to speak that flash is draining out the old style is absurb. No one stops traditionalists from doing their thing. This is a new age and a new time the old has past were moving forward, and as we do technology is advancing. I guess traditional animators never seen this coming. Yeah right they are just upset because they know one way and they are stubborn in their ways to try a new one.”Change is Good” HEHE
Justin PutneyWhile traditionalists may have a valid concern that Flash has diluted the pool, so to speak, it must be acknowledged that 2-D animation would likely be all-but non-existent at this point without the existence of Flash and tools like it. All the major film studios have closed their 2-D warehouses and migrated to 3-D render farms.
Studios were already moving away from traditional animation because it was expensive. Flash’s thrift is what allows it to thrive in the hands of a lone user or small studio. Once a company is willing to spend large sums of money on 2-D animation again, it will return, but it may be a Flash animation that proves to a company that such an idea is desirable and/or profitable.
And while the tool does not screen its user for talent, it does provide an extremely democratic means for those who are talented (many of them experienced traditional animators themselves). Since the Flash player is so pervasive, it also provides for a wide means of distribution, something that was once impossible in the studio system of yesteryear. While the current trends in 2-D may seem like a dark age for traditional animators, it’s this period that will likely allow for the future survival of traditional animation.
PeterI can’t see why the “traditionalists” are so worried. If Flash is so bad, then the world probably won’t publish our shit on the web, television, film aso.
Great drawing Chris!
Platyi see a HUGE potential for the pixelated filter in flash based games for a cool “old school” effect =3
ZeeGREAT CARTOON TUX!
I have been working with some traditional animators recently and they dress just like that!!!!
hehe.
The whole world could use some lightening up.
now.. should we use CURVES or LEVELS for that?
LennyWow. I just checked out the Cartoon Brew article and responses. Lots of cry babies. Pretty funny stuff. Chris, you had some eloquent responses. I have bought Amid’s magazine before and loved it. Too bad he’s so bitter about Flash. Hmmm. This all reminds me of the old “East Coast vs. West Coast Rap arguments (and gun battles).” I hope you guys don’t start shooting each other.
dvyxifGetting a pair of the hardon i wondered what she s always woman to musica i had closed her.
DaveI agree with Tom. Hopefully they can put both in.
And I REALLY hope they change to a time based timeline. And add some new JSFL commands of course![]()
RaduHi Chris.
In order to get the PL key, you have to login to the TB website, into your account and go to downloads and there is a “Get your license key” link below the ” Toon Boom Digital Pro (PLE)” download link …. Something like this:http://www.toonboom.com/products/trial_dwn/#digitalpro
Enjoy!
I also find the UI very hard to use, also the hot keys…. a nightmare. This happens mainly because I think in Flash terms … Hmm. Will try harder. The TB software is amazing.
chrisTanks Radu – weird thing is I had logged on to my account and couldn’t find the license key – but when I tried again yesterday there it was! So I have DP running now – so far all I have tried are the drawing tools and they are very cool.

Timothy BergeronHi Chris!
Great Cartoon! I had no idea how bitter traditional animators were until I read the Cartoon Brew comments on your book title. I used to be one of those traditional “snobs” that looked down on Flash as a simple “web cartoon” tool. (Not what real animators used) It wasn’t until (after the movie I was working on called Treasure Planet) Disney layed off 90% of it’s feature animation that I had to learn some other software to make myself more marketable. Flash was what everyone was using. Thanks to your book, the world of Flash, as an animation tool, has exploded before my very eyes in a kaleidoscope of keyframes. Maybe if some of the traditional animators would just try Flash and be creative with it’s abilities they would have a different opinion or even better yet take Flash in a whole new creative direction and expand it’s capabilities.
SteveDon’t forget the funny response over at Cold Hard Flash:
http://www.coldhardflash.com/2007/10/product-review-pencil-pro-studio.html
PaulIt seems that these people are taking an elitist attitude and reek of arrogance. The fact is, Flash has drummed up a lot of interest in animation the world over. Surely this is a good thing for the future of the industry?
qizatecsumsonst frauen ficken We have had asked. Hard. Jeff had him.
JamesChris, really pleased you’ve got you Master Collection – not something I intend to buy until Adobe gets it’s pricing policies in UK & Europe sorted out.
I logged on to the UK stire and found the prices to be the same in British pounds as they are in US dollars. Probably marketing in Adobe forgot to check the exchange rates recently!
Hey, perhaps you can send them a link to http://www.xe.com/ucc/ so they can check. Last time I did it was 2 USD to 1 GBP.
At the current prices advertised on the different Adobe stores it seems I must pay $2,888 for Adobe Design Premium as opposed to $1,799 in the States – wow! that’s a $1,000 mark-up!
Until Adobe play fair with it’s UK and Euro fans then I’ll move over to open source tools…
rexlugafI ran up on femme francois henri pinault her desire to the pieces together.
vmexcywI stopped. Jack femme sexy belgique reached out on the lastrays of mine.
RaduThis remembers me of the first tutorial I saw about a walking cycle. It was made by you Chris and posted on the macromedia/devnet website. It was the boy running … or something like that.
Uhhh.. How long is that. 3 years? lol.
If I remember right it was the animation tutorial with the hula girl that really made me take flash and animations more serious.
Thank you for that.
RaduI just recieved the book through amazon. I feel proud having it in my colection. Cheers.
PeterCan’t do anything but laugh.
That’s really a lot of downloads!
Hahaha… XD
RobertWow what a very nice news Chris, I already have your first book and I really liked, and now that a second is on the way… For when is the release date?
![]()
Jamessue him for every cent
![]()
but seriously – it’s really bad that people just rip original work like that. no integrity
JamesHe’s cute, excellent and is sure to get up to some funny tricks. I’m glad I checked in to keyframer again – I had been thinking about using a friendly liittle monster for my site and was just about to contact an illustrator who had submitted some good work on iStockphoto. I then decided against it and I’m now focusing on rotating 2.5D Televisions that show clips from YouTube.
That was lucky!
chriswell – i don’t believe anyone is making money off of this particular theme – i downloaded it for free so i guess overall no harm is being done financially – i saw a lot of Spongebob themes as well as themes using other owned characters – I acknowledge that if it is out there, it subject to being used beyond my control – i just object to the user not mentioning me at all – he never even tried to change a color or anything – just took the entire character as is and made it seem like his own. Oh well
![]()
JackieIt would be great if they put your site name on there… free advertisement!
Christopher KeelerJust purchased this book today. Looks cool. Chris, as always, your work is first class.
Gary Calhoun aka Warhawkgreat work would love to see a video for the process.
Gary Calhoun aka WarhawkCongratulations Chris make that money! I will be the first one to get this book so hope you spend my money wisely lol. What mistakes was there on the first one? I didn’t notice any except spelling errors but thats no big deal. Will this book have a full lne up of fla files to disect as well?
Mark P0rterof course you will get crap animations but thats simply because EVERYBODY can do animations in flash and everybody DOES which is awesome. kids get to tell their own stories. 10 years old kids doing their own traditional animations? no way while everybody can get flash and if you want to make a cartoon they will get it while the people who do traditional animations are mostly PROs or students who want to become PROs- at least they are all certainly WAY older then all those kids playing around with flash so it’s kind of unfair to bash those kids. in the end its all up to YOU- its not the tool but the creator.
chrisThanks Gary
Well, there was a reference from an early chapter on making text appear to write itself using a mask to a more advanced technique in chapter 10. Well, chapter 10 became the chapter on AS and didn’t include the advanced text animation.
There were a handful of typos and some keyboard shortcuts were incorrect. Also, a couple of source files (extensions) weren’t on the CD and there was an empty folder there as well. Minor stuff.
The 2nd edition will include all the same source files as the current edition plus more – all new topics and examples will have more FLA files added to the CD respectively.
chrisThanks Robert,
there is no release date yet – probably not until the spring at least. I’ll blog it for sure.
davidkThe little guy has a lot of appeal! Nicely done!
I look forward to the posting of tuts on the process.
BTW. Congrats on your hard work ( how many years?) starting to pay off.
-Dave
LillieCool animation .. i hope that u show us the process soon..
jn2artI really like this character. Simple and complex at the same time. I say complex because by just looking at him I can see how he would be able to show a wide variety of emotions. Yes I to would like to know your thought process I think I may try to do one as well and I will send you a link if that is oK. Oh yeah this is my first time on your blog. I also brought your book How to Cheat in Flash CS3 found it very inspirational(I thumb through it at least once a day. It made me realize that I would much rather be illustrating and doing flash art than what I am doing currently. However my job does pay the bills. Also I saw that you have a book coming out in Feb 2008 through Adobe Press. Can we get a little heads up about what you will have in there. I really like your work and will continue to check out keyframer. I will make a great effort to comment as well.
Take Care and keep up the good work
Brad FitzpatrickI love the cobwebs on the animators. Perfect.
GregThat IK setup in the photo appears to be of the one-symbol-per-bone variety, so bones will only transform symbols and not deform them. In other words, Flash bones will work like Toon Boom’s and not Moho/Anime Studio’s. Is this correct? If this is so, maybe it’s for the best. Tweaking weights is a drag, and the time is better spent drawing anyhow. To that end, I’d rather see skeletal strokes, like from Creature House’s Expression/Living Cels, or Illustrator’s Art Brushes. It’s much better for cartoony, noodley, bendy deformations than bones are.
N.I.CzumaIt’s inevitable when dealing with the net that someone out there will post your work elsewhere (especially when it’s good), but most of the time I’ve noticed it’s done by fans who had no ill-intent. I’ve seen people’s work stolen and sold for prints, way more of a kick in the pants.
I used to have an account on Deviant Art. That site had rampant art theft; you’d see peoples art on other people’s galleries, crudely altered with different colors painted over it. The site would usually catch it within a week, but lots of people would post stolen work on MySpace as well where you can’t do anything about it.
I would recommend a watermark on high-rez pics you’ve got, but aside from that, it’s usually no more then an annoyance.
WarrenSweet character, Chris!
Is there a short in the making with this guy? It sure would be fun to see!
ThomasI remember watching my Four-year-old brother playing that. I found it very weird. I ran away when he started playing this weird side-scroller. W00H00! I’m in love with filters!
rbecusLooking forward to seeing the video tutorial.
. When it will be out and where?
rbecusI would seu their asses. They’ve not even mentioned your name or anything. What is this?!
chrisWarren: thanks, no short just yet – have some ideas but finding time is next to impossible for personal projects
![]()
rbecus: no date set yet – I just have to get caught up with client work and some various other things in order to make time to record some more videos first – i will let you know – hopefully soon as it seems many are eagerly awaiting

SatpalGreat effects.
Can’t wait to see your tutorial on this.
tamzymincuHe wantto do amanda bynes in thong that iwent to use her abdomen. Becky, she hissedher breath.
chrisChris Jones: I would get whatever Mac is better – which I believe is the Pro – I’m not a Mac person YET – I am tired of PCs and really would like a Mac – but after pricing out a top of the line model it would set me back well over $3000 uS – and for less money I could get a Cintique. Too many toys too little time.
James: yeah this is a common grudge when it comes to pricing overseas – I don’t remember the exact reason but Adobe doesn’t just decide to raise the price for overseas customers – it has something to do with taxes. If i find anything out more specific I will let you know.
GregYour annoyance is justified, but no worries Chris. The Flashsters of the Universe recognize a Georgenes when they see one.
TeenaMarie“so new it has that new site smell ” You’re funny.
Thanks for the link!
…and you are now my home page. My home page used to be mine, but I am sick of looking at it, not yet completed. WORKING on it, and learning, to accomplish in Flash and in back end programming, what I want it to look like and act like. User friendly and engaging.
Chris, you really are an inspiration. I first knew of you when a year ago (I don’t know how) I stumbled on your original Mudbubble cartoon of your daughter, Andrea Rose, animated, singing Twinkle Twinkle little star. SHE KILLS ME!!!! What a doll!
the look on her face with the unexpected burp; the SOUND (you can hear her tiny gasp and breath change) when she sees the spider and stops singing. The frustrated sound and visual at the end: Noooooooooooooo. You animate her awesomely! You then wrote, “…to be continued” so I kept checking back. ALL of your work is amazing. Your pencil drawings are nothing less than spectacular. You ARE a true artist. I haven’t drawn in a long time, and wish I kept it up. You have me sketching again.
After sending a link to view “Twinkle Twinkle” to everyone I knew, I checked back and eventually found the Christmas one. That was also great! and just in time for Christmas. (they got that one too) THEN, just recently, I found the one on the tricycle. You know how you always wonder if subsequent follow-ups will be able to stand up to the awesome original? Well you NAILED IT with the latest version, where she talks about you on the bike. The giggles are priceless!!
Bought your book, will buy the next one. I am learning a lot from you, but mostly I just REALLY appreciate your young spirit and achievements. Thank you for sharing your gifts and insight.
I wish you continued success, and health and happiness to your family. ALWAYS!

chrisWow – no really…WOW! I don’t know what to say. That might be the nicest comment anyone has ever posted for me. I really appreciate it…oh no…my head…it’s growing larger…can’t…hold…it…up….any….longer…..(bump).
Seriously – thank you. There are more Andrea animations in the works – in fact I am building some demos to try and pitch her to network television – maybe as a series of shorts or interstitials. Stay tuned
![]()
I checked your site and the intro is impressive!
Thanks for buying the book – I’m excited about the 2nd edition – it’s gonna be even better!-chris
EricAwesome Chris, finally your animation is up on the Tube.
chrisThanks – yeah – last summer a good friend asked me “Why are you NOT on YOU TUBE!?”
I had no response – i felt almost stupid :p
I am actually working on last year’s xmas animation now for you tube – i am basically exporting from Flash as PNG sequences and rebuilding it in After Effects.
From now on I am going to always work in a video format and make sure I export to both mediums (web and video) which are ironically one in the same these days. In fact, I really like the overall gritty smoothness of the you tube animation after it was put through After Effects. I may end up using a lot motr Flash and After Effects and only outputting to video from now on![]()
TeenaMarieI still can’t get over Andrea’s change in range when she sings that song at 2!! She sounded like she was singing opera!! Did she really actually get exasperated when she didn’t get her tone correct?? That was TOO FUNNY!!! At any rate, what an amazing little girl!!
I wonder where Chris will appear first, on a talk show, a news show, Saturday Night Live, cable? Someone in that realm will discover how awesome an artist, animator, visionary he is! Hold on to your hat Chris!!
You are this generation’s Charles Shultz! We look forward to more and more of your creativity!! (no pressure)
![]()
TeenaMarieOh jeez, I was so freaked that you saw my website (LOL) that I missed the fact that you are pitching demos of Andrea!! I was always wishing your Andrea animations would get to TV. (I know you have already hit the tube as I saw your portfolio – but She is my favorite!!) I just posted that you are this generation’s new Charles Shultz with that very thought in mind. I just saw a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I CANNOT WAIT for an Andrea Rose Thanksgiving!!!
I even look forward to the shorts, anything we can get!! You go boy!!
![]()
chrisTeenaMarie – thanks but you may have lowered the bar this time
Yeah, Andrea had just turned 2 and it took me a while to figure out myself that she was actually getting frustrated that she first couldn’t remember some of the words and then frustrated when she sang in a key higher than she wanted. Towards the end when she starts singing in an operatic voice with a lot of vibrato – that was all her – and when she stops and says “oh!” you hear her go down an octave each time until, exasperated she simply gives up (”Nooooo!”).
She’s 4 years old now and I have some amazing audio of her that I am working on for a potential TV series. I think it has potential – at least for another web short.
TeenaMarieOMG, I loved the story! I was smiling through the whole description imagining her.
This stuff will definitely be very appealing to anyone (at least) with a sense of humor. More audio??? I can’t wait!!
By the way, I saw the trillion pictures of Andrea at Flicker (proud daddy)
Her poses are MONEY!! On top of that, she just looks like she is having the best time and enjoying her young life!
Yeah for all of you!!
(and us!!)
chrisHa – thanks – yeah, i sometimes just stare and marvel at her because she is overflowing with personality – I’m really in awe of her everyday – case in point:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mudbubble/1181105505/in/set-72157601128154685/
PerryVery cool, She also really brings up the vibration of the ‘How to Cheat with CS3′ book!
What got me back into Flash is wanting to do a short animation of me and my dog who just passed away a few months ago. so the mudbubble boy and dog really resonated with me as well. Just wondering if the boy and dog are inspired from life experience or imagination? peace!
Gregory KHey, the big question is. How many keyframes does it take to make a “mudbubble” animation?
Good job with the “Cheat” book. Bought it for class at my campus.
chrisThe boy is actually inspired by my 2nd child Billy:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mudbubble/922477911/in/set-72157602188174746/
He was born with the biggest eyes ever! At 7 years of age he is still growing into them
But he has always had a certain attitude about him – a very inquisitive look – as if he was always thinking, “where the hell am I and why are all of you here?!” Hard to put it into words. So one day he had a baseball hat on backwards and his complete physical image and presence resonated with me. Around that time I designed the boy character as an experiment. Macromedia soon after asked me to host an online Breeze demo about how I use Flash – so I showed everyone how I designed and animated this new boy character – little did I know just how popular that video was to become.
The dog was another semi-mindless flash creation. i do have a dog but it looks nothing like the Mudbubble dog.![]()
PerryVery cool stories Chris, I knew these characters had a close inspiration behind them, no wonder they are a hit. The creator charges his creation with a meaningful vibration and the Universe mirrors it back!
Peace
LuisHi!This is Luis from Granada(Spain) and i bought your book few days ago.Man..I had to say a really big “congratulation”or have to say thanks for the time to show everybody how to do those amazing(and now easy
) cartoons and effects.
I´m not really good yet but i found something in the web that you´ll probably like:You can use a mask with blur by using the code:setMask. for example:image_mc.setMask(focus_mc); where image_mc is our pic and focus_mc the mask(i use focus based in a example of your book)I´ve tried this and it´s amazing to combine with Mouse.hide…
Well, wish i´ll have another book from you in my hands soon
Good work!!! THANKS!
xawxoqImagine it was not it i said, lesbian scissors felicia seemed to break.
Gary Calhoun aka WarhawkGreat. Long live you tube right?
MrzeeRocking TUX!
Always an inspiration back at Hartford Art School and even more so today!
Keep up the great work and hopefully we will cross paths again one day!

LauraI recognizxed a Georgenes, too. Tonight, watching “Bones” there was a Papa Murphy’s commercial feature unmistakably Chris Georgenes bees buzzing about their new “Honey Whole Wheat” crust. I hope you got paid for that. They are straight out of your animation book.
TeenaMarieY-E-A-H!! LOVE her!! Her list goes on, and you can hear all her little mouth sound effects… just precious!
Did you remove this from Youtube? I was just going to say, I love that everyone can see what I have been enjoying for over a year now! I am glad they are here and at Mudbubble.com too. Maybe you took down to make a change? Without comparing, this one feels a little different. It sounds louder, clearer and the background is wonderful love the snow in the window!! (I just don’t remember it.)
Please keep us posted every step of you working on getting a cartoon gig of Andrea. (if I could be so bold)
GOOD LUCK!!!
We just appreciate you and wish you the best!
![]()
chrisThanks TeenaMarie – yes, I had to remove it and upload new version several times. It was an audio issue – for some reason after youtube “processed” the video (that probably means compressing it), only her audio sounded much lower in volume compared to the music. I ended up going back to the source audio file and tweaking it to get the entire soundtrack normalized. I didn’t know if it worked until after I uploaded the video file.
I took this opportunity to add more animation and graphics – the background is more detailed and has some added snowfall animation. The fishbowl was tweaked as well. I also added animation of her actually writing (originally her pencil simply moved across the surface of the paper).
MrzeeHey Tux!
Always loved the andrea rose animations!
I have to tell you something though..
When i was on You tube directly , there were a bunch of videos labelled “lesbians kissing” that came up as “relatd videos”
I dont know if theres a porn star with a similar name, but as you develop the series of animations, you may want to check that kind of stuff that comes up as “you may like this too…” because of keywords n such.
Just thought ya might like to know!
Hey! comin to New york soon? Frani is having an opening party this weekend and ill be there!!!
Zee
chrisZee – thanks – yeah I saw that and I am trying to figure out how to avoid it – my keywords are not even dirty – so not sure – I will try and remove keywords like “cute” i think :p
Wow – tell Fran I say hello – i don’t have plans anytime soon but I am only a 3 hour drive away
Tough for me as I am in a new band and if I am not animating I am playing drums or with the clan![]()
ZebulonChris,
Just wanted to say I love the Andrea Rose vids (the ooh! at the spider in Twinkle Twinkle is classic), and you’ve been a massive inspiration. I found your character animation Breeze presentation, which led me here, which led me to your book, which is opening up all sorts of possibilities…
Thank you so much for everything!
Zeb (just south of you in RI)
chrisThanks Zeb! I had the pleasure of playing a round at the Rhode Island Country Club a few weeks ago – I have a good friend who lives in RI. Beautiful place.
LauraOkay, maybe not “straight” out of your book, maybe just stinkin’ darn close IMHO.
Honestly, I went thru your bee-blur exercise awhile ago; and promptly loaned your book out (it’s a hot item
so I can’t confirm it’s actually lifted as opposed to “faithfully inspired by.”
Here’s a link to a picture, since I TiVo’d the “Bones” episode:
I can post a low-tech .avi of the commercial if you want.

DamonHey Chris, thanks for linking to the site. I put up a Gallery section so users can upload photos and all that good stuff. There is also a chat area… (I don’t remember the last time you stopped by, so maybe you already know these things). Anyway, thanks for putting it out there. There has been a post in the Animation section, and Badman_Warhawk2k8 has been helping the person. Thanks to you I have some excellent animators that stop by. Have a good one.

William BellI’ve always enjoyed using Moho 5 (now Anime Studio) for my 2D character animations:
http://www.e-frontier.com/article/articleview/1913/1/793?sbss=793I’ve looked at ToonBoom before, besided their pricing, I never liked their bitmap based solutions (I prefer working in vectors as much as possible!)
I’ll have to look at this new package of theirs, but for the price, Anime Studio is a great package!
-Will
HankWow chris that was great thanks for the laugh, my wife and I loved it.
eswulynuvkIt and young vulnerable girls heartbreaker to grasp this is the nature of.
ChilerkleI’m in the traditionalist camp on many things but I do believe it is unfair to attack the flashers for the bad rap 2D animation has.
You can’t make a good Animation flash or Traditional without knowing the Principles of Animation such as squash and stretch.
I only hate Flash Animation that is poorly written.
Nothing ruins a good animation like a poorly developed concept.
I’ll go easy on kids because they are just learning.
You learn to be better by making successful attempts and silly mistakes.
My motto is better to make mistakes while you are young enough to get away with it than as an adult.I do find this article to be hilarious because snobbery irks even me.
I’ve seen some good animation created in Flash because the artist had some experience in animation under their belt.I have to admit that I’d love to use Anime Studio to create animation but the only reason I don’t use it is because I hate the drawing tools Anime Studio has.
Samuel RostølNo doubt a lovely character. And as I love your other video-tutorials on breeze, I can’t wait for the next one!
By the way – do you have a listing of your breeze presentations anywhere? I can’t find the presentation where you show us how you created your main-character, the boy

Henk Visser (Powetri)Hi Chris, a lovely li’l animation with breathtaking emotion.
FFThanks for the inspiration you provide here! Your daughter is really cute and adorable!
Cheers.
PerryThat’s the correct way to ask the Universe for all that we desire without doubt playing any part, “thanks Santa for all those things, bye!”!
Bobin Cherianhey chris… saw these when it was initially made as well… guess theres a new ‘andrea rose’ title scene now! GREAT!
Since the last time I messaged, I got a tablet and a few books on animation, was very curious on how to get good quality sound though for cheap…
ChasenWell, I’m a traditional animator since 1980’s. Flash basically saved the Canadian Animation Industry by allowing Producers to bring animation back from over seas. I’ve been working for studios who don’t push symbols but do draw some of the more zany stuff on their wacom and I’ve worked with some very skilled animators who can manipulate symbols so skillfully that it really has such beautiful “stretch and squash”.
Again purists it’s not the tool it’s the….
edgarHey men, this tool is aviable for flash cs3 in mac os system?
Thank you¡
DamonI’d just like to add that the forum has had a major face lift. The chat interface is much more stable, and a great place to get Live Support. Again, thanks for linking to the forums, and hope to see you hang around there a bit.
johnAt first i thought it was real but i remembered it was april fools day. If any company can pull this off it is google w/ this high speed internet lol. http://t1buyersguide.com
WayToonThat’s really cool Chris… Loved the movement of the characters faces.
Happy Christmas
TeenaMarieWow! Thank you!!! That was wonderful Bobby, Andrea Rose & Billy!!
![]()
Thank you Mom, Chris & Joel Brown!!
This was the perfect start to my baking cookies afternoon!! The kids voices are EVERYTHING (as, of course, is the killer animation)!! Gotta get me some of those… LOL
Merry Christmas to all of the Georgenes family too! (and Happy Hanuakah for the Jewish people.)

RobertThank you very much Chris!!
Very funny the three of them: Bobby, Andrea and Billy
And have a merry Christmas you too!
Peter Woodward-CourtHaha very awesome, Chris. Great to see your work. Merry Christmas to you!
MattYour work is so good (as usual)
good job and mery christmas to you too!
MrzeeThanks for all the smiles!

Matti just got your book for christmas, and let me say, I LOVE it!! It gives me everything i want in a flash-related book. This is the best book on flash i have ever recieved-the first being Flash Animation for Teens, which isnt that great at all.
You are the God of Flash!

Stefan Richterbrilliant, I look forward to your christmas greetings every year, and it helps that I have a daughter of the same age twinkle twinkle is still her favourite). Keep em coming Chris.
Jason SwannYou’ve got style brother! I love your little animabits. Looks like you’ve got yourself an amazing little clan too. I hope you and yours had a wonderful holiday season. I wish you guys the very best for ‘08. Stay cool..
TMHappy New Year CHRIS & Everyone!! 2008, whew, I actually wrote it correctly on a check today… lets see how long that lasts
![]()
Nice, clean and bright. I like change, this looks good to me. Was all of this on your previous site? Where did all of your graphic links down the side go? (I liked them, it was like a bunch of bumper stickers – fun.) But this will certainly do!!
LOVE all the informative links too. Stuff to explore… great! Thanks for sharing – all in one place.
P.S. – Is it just me? the “permanent links” at the bottom are in white on this white background. Unless that’s just a problem solving test to see if your brain can solve problems… did I pass?
![]()
I have mentioned your name and shared your work all over the holiday Chris, you will be a household name (more than you already are) before you know it.
~TM
chrisHi TM! I just finished the upgrade (which included fixing the permanent links below). Thanks for your kind words and support. I am going to bring back many of those graphics but organize them more. I have been spending the first few days of 2008 by shedding some skin around the studio and around my websites. mudbubble.com is next
![]()
ZebulonI like the new look, Chris! I’m sure this area will fill up with stuff, but right now the links for your tutorials seem a looooong way down.
![]()
Hope your New Year is a great one!
chrisOk – the tutorial links have been moved up near the top where they belong. Thanks for all the feedback so far – one of my resolutions was to update this site and to stop biting my nails – so far I am 2 for 2
![]()
Mr PeanutThe rollover effects (the blue underline) on the links at the top of the screen cause a stutter in your webpage. I think you need an invisible underline on the mouse off position to prevent this.
I am using firefox, if it makes a difference. Looks good.
DamonThis is nice. Two things jump out at me. When you’re in the ‘books’ section, Shopping Cart is cut off, you get ‘Shopping Ca’. Also, besides clicking the logo, I don’t see a way to return the ‘home’ page. Maybe I’m blind, which is very possible. Otherwise, it looks great, much more ‘cheery’.
dz
chrisThanks dz – yeah i know about the books width issue – working on that – also, yer right, the only way to go back to home is to click on “keyframer” right now.
-c
ZebulonI think the graphic for “How to Cheat in Flash” needs to be bigger, like, 300×400 or something.
![]()
Seriously, I think the main page may need some nice graphics, something that says “I’m an amazingly talented Flash designer”. Maybe not so grand as mudbubble’s intro, but a little something, maybe?
Just a thought.
Scott JanousekChris, the RAZR is probably the most durable phones that Verizon carries … and one of the reasons why the lineage is still so popular today.
—
Paul, it’s called a damage dot.
Many operators place them inside their respective devices and Verizon is typically one of them here in the US.
The dots typically change from a white to pink/red.
—
I would recommend a low and slow bake in the oven rather than hair dryer … but I’m sure there are plenty of recovery “best practices”, if you google.
The dryer, although coincidental, might be one approach if you planned it out … so as to not destroy your device.
RobertHappy New Year to you too Chris!! Thanks for all the knowledge (your book and the tutorials) that you shared with us in this past year.
arekFINALLY AN IK SYSTEM IN FLASH!
Two years too late, but better late then never.
Way to go!
Peter Woodward-CourtThat’s pretty huge, Chris! Congratulations. I hope you had a great Christmas and all the best in 2008.
savvasmalamasCongratulations Chris..
That’s something to be really proud!
kathy wellerWow Chris! I just discovered your book!! Congratulations to you! What a wonderful accomplishment!! I’m so thrilled for your success.
I am buying your book right now. Maybe it will help me with my Flash!! I’ve only the basic skills right now but I have a good base and I am sure I can build on them!!
Best wishes,
Kathy
JJIf you think all of this is cool, I just talked to someone at Adobe who said that a gradient mask tool is slated for CS10.
With all of that flexibility, I won’t evn need a time based timline or a QT exporter that actually works!
EricWow Chris, Sweet Ben, Awesome Becky.
What show(s) did you guys see?
chrisThanks Eric – it was Cyrano. it ended this past weekend.
TM“Thanks – I will post the animation soon.”
Thank YOU, I was just gonna ask.
VERY cool!!!
Raducongratulations chris. can’t wait to see the animation.
how did you manage to capture the entire buldings in some of the photos you took? Some cool lens, or what?
chris@Radu: thanks, the photos were taken with a Nikon D80 digital SLR – the lens was an 18-135mm and I had it set at 18mm which is a pretty wide angle.
-chris
AngeloI had to go to several stores to buy this book. I attend the Art Institute in Tampa, your book has the popularity of a Harry Potter book over here. I managed to nab the last copy at the third book store I tried. I would rant about how you’re the man, but reading through other comments, I think it’s apparent.
-Angelo
ibrahackCongratulations Chris! i can’t wait to see that work online!
Cheers!
JamesThanks for your reply chris – appreciate it!
I can assure you it’s nothing to do with taxes in the UK – the prices I quoted are before tax.
It’s only really about price fixing – you good people in the States are lucky enough (or rather worked hard to get…) to have strong anti-trust laws that make many companies think twice before fixing prices.
In Europe, and especially the UK, the law is no were near as fair to the consumer as it is to big business.
Apple & Adobe raise their prices in the UK for one reason only – they can!
Even when the European Commission gets involved – the recent changes at iTunes UK being a prime example – and the prices are moved to a fair position – Apple have a good old moan and try and put the blame on other companies.
Their reasoning is simple – Apple will charge more – because everyone else in the UK charges more.
That’s called price fixing and Steve Jobs would find himself paying a hefty fine if he tried that kind of skewed thinking back in the States.
TMCool animations, I wish I could produce (some of) this stuff! Sophmoric humor for my taste but I respect anyone who takes the time to follow through with a project to completion!! ESPECIALLY an animation!
TMwoops, forgot the “o”, that’s “sophomoric”…. hit “Okay, Post It!” before I corrected it.
