Dear Chris,
You are a great flash artist, i am currently in a VCT major as an interactive media designer. Flash really excites me. I want to be great at flash including action scripting but it kind of feels like BGSU my college only teaches about 1% flash. It just seems like flash is soo huge of a program with so many things, what is the best way for me to go about learning all of flash. Did you just teach yourself or did you find some good work shops?

oh and if i make a line or draw a shape with the paintbrush tool, is there any fast way to make a stroke around it. stroke is always grayed out when im dealing with paint brushes

Chris,

Perfect timing! I’m teaching another Flash class now and I’ve given them a character animation project. A lot of them are using the Bones tool for simple things, like a dogs tongue wagging and a chickens legs walking.

Thanks.

@Aaron: Thanks! Too bad they don’t focus more on Flash. I started with Flash 3 and learned it by simply experimenting while at work (we used it for web and TV production). It was my job to learn it :)
As for adding strokes around shapes, use the Ink Bottle (S) tool, select a stroke color and click inside the shape :)

@Al: Great to hear! Let me know if you have any questions or want more source files (email me).

@Al: let me know if you have any suggestions for more articles. I have 4 more to write for Adobe ASAP. Will likely write about Classic and Motion tweens, 3D, Deco Tool and something else.

Chris,

Love this article! It started my mind off on visualising new characters and how I work work bones into it.

Thanks

Joe

Can you do an article on using Illustrator and Flash together? Like PB&J?

Bobby – ironically I am planning on an Adobe article that talks about using AI brushes and animating with them and combining that with Flash. stay tuned.
